DeltaV Smart Switches CLI?

I am running an Emerson DeltaV 12.3.1 system that is running on legacy Hirschmann switches.   I would like to migrate over to using Emerson SMART switches; specifically the VE6049 rackmount switches.    Can you still log on and use the Command Line Interface (CLI) to troubleshoot issues, view log files, and make configuration changes?

Due to budget constraints, I will only be able to convert one switch at a time with long periods between each conversion.   Has anyone done something similar and have you encountered any issues doing this?

  • As far as I know the VE6049 is a bunch of expansion modules for the network switch VE6048. Nevertheless thanks for a question. I am on the same way and looking forward the answers.
  • I suppose you can still use the CLI if you wanted to, but I haven't had to since installing the Smart Switches. The Smart Switches are just Hirschmann switches with a DeltaV label and Bios upgrade. The Smart Switch Command Center has been able to answer the questions I have had with my network performance.
Yes, you can install new Smart Switches one at a time as you can afford them. It took a couple years to upgrade all of my old network switches to the Smart Switches, no issues after getting the configuration correct. The last switch I installed went very smoothly. At times I ran one Smart Switch on the Primary and my old switch on the secondary until the next budget would allow another upgrade to complete the network. Never any issues with controller operation running a mixed bag of network switches.

The biggest configuration issue we encountered was the network design. Our first Smart Switches were installed several years ago to replace our original trunk switches (3Com). Our original network ran Primary and Secondary communications, from each controller, through the same switch. The switches were aligned with each controller not the network. This created a network loop in the Smart Switch and caused a loss of communications. We installed two Smart Switches for each trunk of the network, one for Controller Primary, the other for Controller Secondary.

The only other issue I have seen with the Smart Switches is they run very HOT. My original switches ran for years without temperature issues. Two Smart Switches on top of each other will overheat one or both of the switches. That is in an air conditioned room, closed cabinet. I had to install vent fans and 1 inch spacers between the switches to keep them from overheating. Yes, they will shutdown if they get to hot.
  • Chris,

It is a recommended path to consider DeltaV Smart Switches for your DeltaV Area Control Network especially if you are planning to or you are already using Electronic Marshaling. The DeltaV Smart Switches have a pre-configured setup to enable storm control, loop prevention and yet can be managed from the Smart Switch Command Center (in v12.3.1) or the Network Device Command Center (introduced in v13.3). The DeltaV Smart Switches provide access through its serial port (CLI access) for troubleshooting and log files access, and configuration changes are limited to what the available wizards allow you to change - not all options are permitted or exposed through the CLI nor Telnet as the DeltaV Smart Switches are designed with the DeltaV communications in mind - they come pre-configured to work with DeltaV systems out-of-the-box.

The recommended installation guidelines require the DeltaV Smart Switches to be installed with spaces between themselves to prevent overheating, the specific details are provided in the switches safety manuals.

Beyond that, the switch port lockdown is a feature that is easily accessible via the command centers, and with firmware v8.0.13 users can also configure port mirroring for security monitoring. This solution is aligned with the Security Information and Event Management (SIEM) and the Network Security Monitor solutions for DeltaV systems. Please check out additional details related to the latest software available for DeltaV Smart Switches on the Guardian Support Portal (Knowledge Base Articles).

    I hope this helps!
