Ethernet/IP to Modbus gateway recommendations

We are going to be putting in a new skid that will be using Compact Logix 5370 - 1769-L33ER which uses Ethernet/IP protocol. We currently have S-Series Provox migration controllers that do not allow for a VIM card to be installed. Does anyone have experience or recommendations on a Ethernet/IP to Modbus gateway/converter that I can install to get my data from the Compact Logix into a Modbus serial card effectively. I have a few that I have been trying to get to work with a Mettler Toledo ICR and have not had any success getting the communication to work properly. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

Amber

  • For converting between Ethernet/IP and Modbus serial or Modbus/TCP my preferred protocol converter is the Digi One IAP. I've used them on many applications and they work great. It can do a bunch of other protocols as well.

  • Hi Amber,

I’ve used the AnyBus communicators for a number of serial to digital protocol conversions , they are an extremely flexible product and have quite a few options

Below is a link to the specific card that might do the job:

  • ProSoft technology p\n 5201-DFNT-MCM communicates Ethernet/IP to Modbus. (input provided by our Mill PLC resources)
  • Amber,

All of the gateway mentioned will do the job but there are some limitations to each, for instance the Prosoft gateway will limit you to a 100 command only. My prefer has always been to use the RedLion HMI/Data Station for the conversions because it doesn't have that limitation. In addition to EtherNet/IP to Modbus, you'll have 300 other protocols that you can translate as well.

With the CompactLogix, you can save the project as a .L5K and import it into the RL product and have it access your native tags and connect to only the tags that you require to reduce polling. Then those can be block transferred into your Modbus device.

    Josh,

I am going through something very similar to what Amber is doing, except it is for EtherNet/IP Protocol. I am using a VIM2 aon 192.XXX network but our vendor equipment are all on 172.XXX. Will the one in the link work for any gateway mapping?
