DeltaV 10.3 with gateway modbus communication

Hello,

We have M-series DeltaV (10.3) with Modbus serial card and trying to connect Wireless Gateway 1420 via modbus, how do we configure the DeltaV with Gateway via modbus option?

As of now we have connected the modbus port from the gateway to the serial card of DeltaV on pin 3 and 5 is this physical connection enough? or what all needs to be done? On the software side we have added the device under the port with address 1.

If we check for the gateway firmware option- check mark is beside AMS, HART-IP, Modbus/RTU, Modbus TCP, OPC and uncheck for DeltaV, EtherNet/IP, and Ovation.

Thanks and Regards,

Rahul

  • Rahul,
Did you complete the software setup steps?

    www.emerson.com/.../Manual-Smart-Wireless-Gateway-en-87246.pdf

The software can be found on the two disk pack, included with the Gateway. Depending on the PC
system configuration, installation may take 30–35 minutes. Installing both disks in order is
recommended. The Security Setup Utility is located on Disk 1. To install the software:
    1. Exit/close all Windows programs, including any running in the background, such as virus scan
    software.
    2. Insert Disk 1 into the CD/DVD drive of the PC.
    3. Follow the prompts.
AMS Wireless Configurator is located on Disk 2. To install the software:
    1. Exit/close all Windows programs, including any running in the background, such as virus scan
    software.
    2. Insert Disk 2 into the CD/DVD drive of the PC.
    3. Select Install from the menu when the AMS Wireless Configurator setup begins.
    4. Follow the prompts.
    5. Allow AMS Wireless Configurator to reboot PC.
    6. Do not remove the disk from the CD/DVD drive.
    7. Installation will resume automatically after login.
    8. Follow the prompts.
    Note
If the autorun function is disabled on the PC, or installation does not begin automatically, double click
D:\SETUP.EXE (where D is the CD/DVD drive on the PC) and select OK.

Use the following procedure to add a new proxy in the Security Setup Utility:
    1. Open the Security Setup Utility.
    2. Select EDIT>NEW, then select the type of new proxy to be added.
    3. Right click on the new proxy entry and select Properties.
    4. Enter the target Gateway’s Hostname and IP Address.
    5. Select OK.
    6. Select FILE>SAVE.
    7. When prompted for authentication, enter the admin password for the target Gateway.
    8. Select OK.
    9. Repeat Step 2 - 8 to added additional proxies.
    10. Select FILE>EXIT to close the Security Setup Utility.
During this process, the Gateway will exchange security certificates (digital signatures) with the proxy.

    Best of luck,
    Dennis
  • Rahul,

At a high level, you have to make sure the Modbus configuration in the Gateway is done, meaning that the ID, baud rate, and comm settings are set accordingly, and you are mapping the wireless data to Modbus tags. Then in DeltaV you will need to match the Modbus comm settings, and map each Modbus variable following the Gateway’s configuration. Once all this is done, and downloaded, you should be able to get the readings in DeltaV. Modbus configuration can be referenced in DeltaV BoL (I’d start with section: Serial devices and the DeltaV system), and for the Gateway there is a specific chapter in the Wireless Gateway reference manual (http://www.emerson.com/documents/automation/smart-wireless-gateway-hart-manual-en-66138.pdf - see section 5 for Modbus integration) that can help with the details.

    Hi
normally Ams will be installed on the application station which is also having deltav installation .

    Rahul,

Is there an error message that is telling you AMS will not install or is there something in your system configuration?
Do you have access to the GSC? They might be able to provide more insight into configuring your wireless gateway?

Alexandre also provided some good points to review to commission the gateway.

Sometimes I find it is better to start over and begin the configuration from the first step.
During an initial configuration, with new products especially, steps can be over looked and errors created that prevent proper deployment.

    Dennis
  • Important point here: if the wireless gateway is intended  to be integrated via Modbus, then I’d expect that there isn’t direct connectivity to it from the DeltaV ACN, which then means the AMS components running on DeltaV stations will not be able to connect to the gateway (physical constraint). The AMS components could be installed on another station out of the DeltaV network to continue to use Modbus just for data integration into DeltaV.

Another point is that in v10.3.1 we started to support the native integration of wireless gateways into DeltaV. You could plan to integrate the Gateway natively by adding the DeltaV Ready to the Gateway, instead of using Modbus.

    Hi Alexandre,

Thanks for your input. Currently we don't have DeltaV ready feature checked in Gateway firmware option.

Just curious to know- Is this feature just a licensed firmware option OR any hardware component is needed to make gateway DeltaV ready?
  • Rahul,

The wireless gateway needs a license to enable the DeltaV Ready function. And you need DeltaV v10.3.1 or higher to use this feature in DeltaV.
