Refrigeration systems can be a problem in many industries. If not managed well, cooling systems can consume excess power, add unnecessary wear and tear to equipment, and potentially become a safety hazard to personnel and property. TNT Crust of Green Bay, Wisconsin, a producer of 200 million refrigerated and frozen pizza crusts each year, needed to update their ammonia-based refrigeration system that had originally been installed in 1994 before the antiquated systems impacted production. Industrial automation technology using PLCs and PACs was implemented and Emerson Movicon.NExTTM was selected as the Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) software for the new systems. The upgraded control system can more effectively stage resources as the load requires. The highly flexible and intuitive Movicon.NExT platform has provided an overall reduction in electrical power consumption and equipment wear and tear, and improved safety as maintenance personnel can view the entire system through an easily navigated graphical application.
