AMS Really Slow!!!!

Why would AMS slow down? It is taking anywhere from 10-20 minutes to scan a device from DeltaV and 5-10 minutes to open a device in AMS.

And how can I resolve this?

  • Whenever there is an issue with a product, your first call should be to the GSC. They can confirm your version and mine their database for similar incidents and resolutions, or identify a known issue and get you going quickly.

As far as your situation, we don't know what version you have, what your architecture is (proplus, app station or independent server).

Generally, when performance falls off on an application, it could be a resource issue (CPU usage or Memory, disk access) with the computer, an internal problem with the application (memory leak, cache). Was there any change made to the system such as new software, upgrade of software, applied patches etc.

If you look at computer resources with Task manager, you can look to see if there are certain programs that are using "too much" CPU or Memory? Is the CPU pegged on the computer? It could be a different program starving the Device manager.

If you find it is the AMS Device Manager that is using high CPU and memory, or disk access, that would be especially important to log a call. Understand that if you are running an older version the problem may be known and addressed in the current version or hotfix.

Once you've looked at the profile of resource usage, you can try rebooting the server. This will reset all applications and services. It often gives you immediate relief, but the issue may still be present and could come back over time (Days, weeks, months...).

Sometimes just restarting the application or its related services can restore performance. If the issue is triggered by a certain unique set of conditions, it may not come back often or ever.

You can also review the windows logs and look for errors and other unexpected messaging. This could indicate abnormal applications or system behavior. The GSC would need to weigh in on what is normal and they might ask for these logs.

You do need to let the community know what your system details are, or you will get suggestions that will have no bearing on your situation and you could endup doing more harm following such suggestions.

Lastly, make sure your databases are backed up. Worst case is the system is failing or you end up with a corrupt database and your back ups are not current. If I were you, the back up would be my priority. If you end up rebuilding the server or reinstalling, at least you have the latest data backed up.
