Event Category modification in OPC AE server

To integrate our Event(Alarm) historian into the group alarm management tool, I need to change Event(Alarm) categories in DeltaV OPC AE server.

Is there a way to change Event(Alarm) Categories in DeltaV OPC AE server?

  • I had a similar question in 2012, unfortunately not on this forum, and I lost the details of the discussion. I am not 100% sure, but I'd say no. The AE server has no configuration options as far as I know.
At the time, my impression was that it is not widely used (ever since then, I always worked with solutions where A&E information is extracted using the SQL database, not OPC AE). There was very little knowledge/documentation I could find. If you have access to Guardian, search for my name, I think I also had a GSC call open on the topic.

To add, event category corresponds to Proccess Alarm/Project Event, Hardware Alarm/Hardware Event, etc in DeltaV.

Matrikon OPC Explorer can show you all the DeltaV specific categories.

    Hi Istvan

So then does it mean that I need to amend the categories in DeltaV rather than in AE server?
  • In reply to Junggyu Yu:

This is a bit tricky. I think I tried adding a new category, let's say "MYCATEGORY", but on the OPC AE server it still showed up as PROCESS. Give it it a try. I was asking around on customization possibilities but we gave up and went to SQL.
  • In reply to István Orbán:

    Where would you add "MYCATEGORY"?
  • In reply to Lun.Raznik:

When editing an Alarm Type (Setup/Alarm Preferences/Alarm Type), you can select from a predefined list, but it also accepts free text.

  • In reply to István Orbán:

I don't believe that category is related at all. Category information is not configurable in DeltaV as used in OPC A&E. Below shows category from OPC A&E clients POV and those categories correspond to various alarms and events in DeltaV (Process, Device, Hardware, SIS, etc)

  • In reply to Lun.Raznik:

We should clarify what we are asking for as well as how the product is structured. The Category field that is being discussed as not configurable is an internal categorization of alarms for the use of the DeltaV HMI alarm system filters. Where Process, Hardware and Device refer to a Module Alarm, a Node hardware Alert and a Field device alert respectively. This is doubled for SIS systems, created six categories which can be used to targe these different alarm events into different lists or event to specific stations.

The Alarm Category field as noted by Istvan is a user configured field that allows more of a functional alarm category in alignment with ISA18.2, and so you can subdivide your "PROCESS" alarms in to these various categories.

The question I think is which OPC AE field provides the data configured in the Category field of an Alarm, as shows by Istvan.

that is the "category" that you can configure to contain your user specific "categories".

    Hi Andre,

Well, it's kind of tricky: I think I configure a custom category there, even though it does not show over OPC AE, in the SQL database it does take the place of "PROCESS", leading to a mismatch between what you see over OPC (PROCESS) and what you see in SQL (MYCATEGORY).
  • In reply to István Orbán:

DeltaV Event Chroncile database (MSSQL$DELTAV_CHRONICLE) shows DeltaV Event Category. OPC AE client can show both categories, see below. I have created a new category called "PROCESSX" on custom alarm type called "High Alarm Custom". The process alarm is still under "PROCESS_ALARM" category in OPC AE but DeltaV Event Category shows now shows "PROCESSX".
