Use a screen 55 inch

I want buy a screen 55 inch and create a layout for a 4k monitor.

Anyone do this?

  • That is an interesting project. The supported solution is to use a 4K monitor that has 4 HD ports, that take 4 separate monitor feeds and allocates them to the four equal quadrants of the monitor. The DeltaV System still sees this as four monitors, but you get a 2x2 quad layout in a single monitor.

    Using a single monitor with a Display port handling 4K signal creates an unsupported hardware arrangement. The Display management functions in v13.3.1 DeltaV Operate expect to manage a multi graphic layout across multiple monitors. With one physical monitor, you would have to figure out how you will open specific displays in specific locations.

    For instance, the Open Pic dialog offers an icon that represents the four monitors in a quad layout. Selecting one square opens the Picture on either monitor 1, 2, 3 or 4. But now you have 1 monitor with four Display areas.

    Note that in the layout file, you name the four monitors and within each, you can have multiple areas. To start with, each monitor has a toolbar, AlarmBan and display area. We name them Main1, Main2, User1 and User2. You can also add Auxiliary display areas when the displays are of an older aspect ratio, thus keeping the display area consistent and no distortion/stretching of the display occurs.

    So it is definitely possible to create a layout with one monitor and to divide the screen into four display areas that have the same size as the standard picture size. You can set the layout file to initialize to your desired displays.

    Now you have to investigate all the display management functions and which will be "broken", and which will continue to work. I expect all icons that depict monitor layout will now show a single monitor, or will not appear because the system thinks there is no choice.

    The Open PIC functions will need to be adjusted to find the right display area, rather than the right monitor.

    Now, assuming you get this working. There will be no factory support for this. If you miss something and the Operator console locks up or becomes unusable, the Emerson support channel will not be able to troubleshoot or assist with such a major modification.

    Although I think this is quite possible, it is a huge responsibility to take on the support of this. I know of one customer who has been working on this for quite a while and I think they've moved away from it.

    Hello,

    I will try this solution, I asked emerson to find a solution and they didn't find any other solution than the 42-inch Dell monitor.
    But for your information, I want to use a remote connection for this application.

    The monitor is used for macro information, not to control the device.

    Using a Quad monitor thin client to RDP remotely will allow 4 input 4K monitor to display quad layout.

    DeltaV Live solves this via resolution independence. For Operate I would recommend 4 port 4k solution.

    For a science project it would be interesting to get Operate working as quad in single port 4K monitor. For a customer wanting results and a supported solution, keep with the 4 port monitor and quad client.

  • We are also looking into this and have found that there are a couple of solutions to a pre DeltaV Live environment. (most are unsupported.)
    1. Rebuild the default navigation in all objects in the DeltaV Libary as Andre was speaking to. (Will be unsupported I believe)
    2. Purchase the Dell or LG 43 inch quad input monitor. I found that the LG one is just over half the cost of the dell option. (this option would be supported)
    3. Use a video multiplexer. The Emerson iOPS desks solution uses a BARCO unit to combine the video inputs into a single pane of glass. I reached out to Barco and discussed my need with one of there resellers and found that they had a solution from Barco but was extremely expensive. The reseller did have an non-Barco option that was a third the cost $8000 CAD again very expensive. (but would be supported up to the multiplexer)
    4. If you want the 50" screen Planer has a 50" (EP5024K UHD) and a 58" (EP5814K UHD) quad input TV that can do a 2x2 1920x1080 4k. Each is reasonable when compared to the multiplexer option.

    I am told by a couple of folks that they plan to use a 55 inch large screen above three 27 inch monitors for a single operator workstation and am just curious of special considerations. We previously used one with a thin client on v14.LTS, but it was a quad all by itself; this time they're planning to use the 55 inch as one of the 4 monitors. Thanks CHris

    Well, actually, I was reviewing the HCI virtualization PDS recently and saw that the new Thin Clients now support 4K monitors, intended for use with DeltaV Live. A signal Display port connection to a 4K monitor allows a single monitor layout in LIVE to be used with VM's over RDP.

    From a supported perspective, I believe this is intended to provide a single 4K monitor in a user defined layout, with the DeltaV Operator station driving the equivalent Pixel size of four HD monitors. i.e. one 4k screen with four Display Frames in a 2x2 format and the additional display frames running the alarm banners.

    what you are describing is a single Operator station running one 4k monitor with three HD monitors below. I'm not sure that is possible. From what I have seen, the RDP session to the operator station needs to be laid out in a rectangle. THree HD monitors will be wider (3 x 1920) in pixel resolution than the 4K monitor (2 x 1920) and that would not fit a rectangle. Two HD monitors below a 4K would form a rectangle. That might be something to try.

    I have connected two 4k monitors to a signle Operator stations, which doubled the screen real estate over that of one and still counts as two monitors (no quad monitor license require). However, this is not a supported layout and is not tested by the factory.

    If you have a physical Computer with quad display ports on the video card, that may allow the layout you are describing. I may be wrong about the rectangle layout for RDP sessions too.

    What I'm saying is you'll have to do some testing. If you are using thin clients, you have the added complexity of RDP. This may result in different behavior as compared to a quad monitor workstation with direct connection.

    I'll point out that the iOPs console solution based on BARCO uses RDP connections to DeltaV VM workstations and the Theater style layout uses multiple workstations to serve different monitors. That is, one single workstation does not drive that much glass in that solution. There are at least two Thin client appliances displaying sources from at least two workstations.

    I'd be curious to see what you discover if you try this.
