Validating - Checking DeltaV Database backup hbk

Hello All,

I have inherited a 17 DeltaV v10.3 - Windows XP systems. I am migrate these systems to DeltaV v12.3.1 - Windows 7. I have imported the individual DeltaV systems into a test migration system (v10.3-Win XP). I have found that using the database admin import fails when using the hbk files. I do not know why.

Questions

1. Besides loading up the backup (hbk) into a test system, How can I validate that the DeltaV Admin backup works and is good?

2. My guess (from the command line argument in the hbk) is that the DeltaV system is using a Objectivity DB script for the backup process. The other database tools I have used generate a log file that can be analyzed for backup issues. Is there such a thing in the DeltaV system?

3. What is the best practice to make sure that a DeltaV system can be recovered?

Just backing up without testing will give you lots of unwanted experiences from hours of pain rebuilding.

Thanks for any help,  Carl Hanson

  • Carl,

When going from one physical station to another, I normally export the entire configuration from DeltaV Explorer (fhx file), copy to the new server, use the migration utility in the Database Admin utilities and then import the configuration. The migration utility converts all syntax from the old version (10.3 in your case) to the new version (12.3.1 in your case).

if you were migrating from v9.3 to 10.3 and remaining on Server 2003 / XP, the migration utility would do the export, version migration and import automatically (I think). Going to v12 will require the new servers and I think you must do that part manually.

  • Carl,
Take a look at DVUpgrade.chm on Disk two of your 12.3.1 install set. It will walk you through the entire DeltaV Upgrade and Migration process. DeltaV also include the DeltaV Upgrade Wizard that you can install on your 10.3.1 system and have it take you step by step through all the actions you need to take to gather files for the new 12.3.1 system.
