DeltaV database administration backup and restore

Hello I am trying to see if there is a guide or help on how to backup and restore my DeltaV database. The only information I found so far is how to back up and restore the entire PC using something like ACRONIS. I only want to back up the application and not the whole PC. I tried using the database tool, but it doesn't seem to work. I would get an error such as "Unable to restore over active database" when I tried to load it into a rebuilt machine during my recovery dry run on restoring the system.

Any help would be great.

  • Hello! I am not sure if I understood your problem, lets go to try! hehe
Are you trying to reinstall the DeltaV? Or are you just trying to restore the database? In the first case I prefer to format the computer and install DeltaV again (here you can use Acronis if you have one), my experience with uninstall and reinstall DeltaV wasn't gave me good results. So you will create a new database and import your database.

About that message "Unable to restore over active database". The DeltaV does not allow to restoring over the active database. You need to create a new database from a backup. I think there is an option like "Create a database from a backup"

If you have any DeltaV system you can check on the Books Online the title "Backup/Restore". The way looks like that: System administration and maintenance > Database administrator tools > Utility functions

I hope it can help you, let me know if you still have question!

That is correct, you must create the database from backup, and so that cannot be the active database.

The database name does not really matter to DeltaV, but it can be important to you, especially if you've created backup procedures that look for the database directory and documentation that references the database name. The database files are stored in a folder bearing the name of the database. You'd have to update all those references. So it is typically preferred to restore to the same database name.

If you used the default DeltaV_System, and you reinstall DeltaV, you cannot recover the database to that database. But you can rename the default database, and that will then allow you to create a new database with the desired name. When you rename a database, you must close all connections to the database server. Note, that Deltav renames a database by first copying the database files to the new name folder and then deletes the old folder. So you do need sufficient disk space to allow the copy to complete before the old files are removed.

Or, you can create a new empty database, set it active, delete the existing default database and then create from back up. This will use the least amount of disk space.
