DeltaV Simulate Dongle Suddenly stopped working

Hi everyone -

It seems that our company's DeltaV dongle has suddenly stopped working. We use it on one or two workstations (Version 11.3) and move it from place to place frequently. Now it's like none of the computers we use recognize it anymore. Can the dongle be damaged or corrupted in some way? Any ideas to help resolve the problem?

  • Hello Chris,
It may seem silly and rather basic, but have you checked the date on it? If it's expired, that would explain it.
  • Hi,
    1. Check the expiry date on dongle.
    2. Have anybody changed system date and time while the dongle was connected to system. That might corrupt the dongle.

  • The real question is whether this is a licensed dongle or an SI Dongle (Gold key). The SI Dongles have an expiry date so the suggestions below would apply. If this is a licensed Simulate Multi Node license, it would not expire.

You can use the Watchit utility (From Windows Menue, Run type "watchit". In the dialog that appears type in the path "DONGLEDRIVER". This will show you the recognized dongle and its pertinent information. The following shows the response from an SI Key installed on the Pro Plus:
    SI0001-000x-xxxx EXP: 2017/01/01,SI,(OK),HARDLOCK

You can also use the path "SYSTEMIDKEY", which returns the following information:
    SI0001-0003-0761 EXP: 2017/01/01,SI??,LOCAL,STATUS_OK,SI,DV-VIRTUAL1,HARDLOCK

I believe the SYSTEMIDKEY can be run on any workstation and it will return the KEY recognized by the system, while DONGLEDRIVER returns the information on the locally connected Key. Or maybe it's the reverse.

If you are unable to read the Dongle using Watchit, the issue may be that the dongle has been damaged. If you have an other dongle you can use to check you can confirm that it is indeed the dongle and not the HARDLOCK driver. Since you are seeing the same issue on multiple systems, it is likely the dongle.

Note that you can also use DeltaV Explorer/About menu choice to view the connected Dongle information.

Thanks for the information - I ran the Watchit utility and it turns out it was expired. That's better than a damaged key! Thanks again everyone.
