Downgrading S Series 12.3 controller to 11.3 Version

Hello,

My question concerns downgrading controllers. Is it possible to downgrade S Series controllers from 12.3 to 11.3? Is this even necessary or is the 12.3 firmware compatible with the 11.3 DeltaV software? What is the correct procedure to do so (decommission controller, commission, flash, download, etc)? Are there any risks implicated?

  • What version of DeltaV do you have? I am assuming that you have a DeltaV v11.3 and this is why you need to downgrade. It is best to downgrade your controller if you have DeltaV v11.3. Running your controller fw at 12.3 with DeltaV 11.3 might cause issue since there are new futures codes are built in that your DeltaV v11.3 might not know how to handle and could result in unwanted issue.

To downgrade, commission your controller(s), go to controller upgrade utility. start>all program>DeltaV>installation>Controller Upgrade Utility, Select your v12.3 fw controller to be downgraded. If you have redundant controller, flash your standby controller first then your primary controller. If you have a simplex controller, then you will have to do a full download.

MAKESURE your process is not running. The risk would be that you take your controller down or a bump in your process. If you have simplex controller, it will take your system down.

Any anycase, if you see a yellow triangle on your controller, you will need to do a full download.
  • If you have the new SQ controller and are on DeltaV version 11.3.1, you will need a minimum of two DeltaV hotfix installed on your system. (DeltaV_1131_CTRL_15_CSS) and (DeltaV_1131_WS_15_CSS) or more current must be installed on your system to flash down the SQ controller to version 11.3.1. These two hotfixes are needed for an 11.3.1 system to recognize the new SQ controller.
