  • It is possible but your situation is not completely defined. I'm assuming you have a redundant controller and are replacing the failed standby, or maybe upgrading an SDPlus node to SQ or SX. If this is a simplex node, the node will not be operational during the controller flash.

when replacing a standby controller, it will be commissioned automatically by the actions of the Active controller. You must flash the controller to your v11.3 firmware before a switchover is performed. If you perform a switchover to the new controller while it is at version 12, I believe you will not be able to switch back. Open the Controller upgrade utility and flash the v12 controller to v11 firmware. The flash upgrade will complete and reset the standby controller. It will automatically commission and be downloaded.

There will be no impact on the database during this activity.

If your situation is different, please clarify.

Note that a v12.3 SQ or SX controller has different diagnostics, as well as new features. You should flash it to v11.3.1 before doing anything with this on your v11 system. Alternatively, you can install the controller temporarily to flash it and then install it in your system.

I thank you for your clarification Andre Dicaire.

just to explain the exact situation on our database we have 5 redundant controllers MD / MD + and we want to change a simplex controller MD+ with a redundant controller MQ 12.3 but before I have to downgrade to version 11.3.

    Best regards.

  • In addition to Andre's points, please also note that DeltaV v11.3 was released before the MQ controller. The MQ was released initially with support only for v12.3 or greater systems. Emerson subsequently released a v11.3.1 hotfix to make the MQ and SQ backward compatible. If you have the original v11.3 or v11.3.1 software installed without the MQ/SQ hotfix, then you won't have the v11.3.1 MQ firmware in your Controller Upgrade Utility library. Please see the KBA NK-1400-0054 "MQ and SQ Controllers Now Available for DeltaV v11.3.1". If you're a v10.3.1 user, see NK-1500-0011 "MQ Controllers are Now Available for DeltaV v10.3.1 Systems".
