OPC license release

Hi All,

From an engineering station we read/write data to the controllers via OPC. Our engineering station has license for 500 data. When we disconnect from the OPC server the licenses are not released immediately. We need to know the exact time period to get the licenses released once the server is disconnected. Or in other words : how to release the OPC license for points that we don't want to read/write anymore? Does anybody encountered this problem already?

Thank You!

  • We've used it to audit and apply our SIS alarm shelving, but had to do it in batches for the same 500 point reason.  It was a pain but closing excel seemed to close down the connection, taking no more than  a minute.

Are you logging your opc writes, for auditing purposes?

We are using Excel Add-in to update parameter values in the controllers. We read the on-line values from DeltaV, we overwrite them, then we re-read them to check if the writing was succesfully done. This means that for 1 parameter we have 2 reads and 1 write. We have tousands of parameters. We want to do this algorithm by using a macro, which does this work sequentially, so we do not need too many concurent connections. So we would like to close connections with some parameters and open new connections with new ones. The problem is that the license is used by the parameters even if they are not linked anymore. Maybe there is an additional time-out for this license calculation...?!

If you sequentially step your client through the process of removing items, deleting groups, then disconnecting, do you see the number of points count decrease thorugh diagnostics?

  • He needs to exit excel in order for excldvsrv to release the connection.  To do it sequentially, it would have to exit excel, wait some time before reopening excel and instantiating another connection.

Doesn't sound like a good idea to have an autonomous program changing DCS process parameters, especially if you are going to entrust a VBA application....just a thought!

    Hi,

is the tag count increasing or the connection amounts?
