OPC Server license limit

I'm trying to use OPCWatchit on my proplus server (that is supposed to be licensed with 250 pts by default).

As soon as I open the OPCWatchit windows I get "Server init succeeded." as "Status" feedback. It seems to work also because I'm able to navigate through the "Attributes" paths when I press "BrowsePath".

When I try to read a value from a certain path ( "05-TI-1537/AI1/PV.CV" ) I get this error message "Exceeded OPC Server license limit. Item not added. "

Is there any workaround? Am I missing something?

Thank you?

  • Open deltav diagnostics, expand the Opc subsystem of the server and observe the number of clients, source, and load for the clients. I think you may find you have clients that have disconnected improperly that have retained a hook into the client and point count.

    Youssef,
    Thank you.
I have no client connected to the server. From diagnostic it is reported zero clients connected.
The truth is that I'm checking the OPCWatchit because I'm trying to collect one on-line data from the controller using excel macro.
Because I was not able with the macro, first thing I checked was the OPC connection through OPCWatchit.
I discovered OPCWatchit was not working too.
As I told you, I have no external system connected to the ProPlus via OPC.
  • It is the Application Stations that have the "default" 250 point OPC licenses. However, you can still use OPCWATCHIT from the ProPlus. When you open OPCWATCHIT, select "Change Server" and enter the name of your App Station. Then you should be able to read variables. Note that there is another program called "Watchit" that will read without selecting a server. You cannot browse to the path but you can type in the path and it will read the DeltaV parameters!
    Hope this helps!

I thought the proplus use to come with 100 points out of the box, but as I read the latest PDS, you are correct, the 250 point OPC license is an add on. Another interesting thing I learned from the PDS is "The OPC Data Server and the DeltaV Excel Add-in cannot run simultaneously
on the ProfessionalPLUS" . I am not sure if Gaetano is referring to this when he says 'excel macro' or a bit of custom OPC client code in Excel.

    Youssef,
you are right. Let me explain what I'm trying to do.
I want to read on-line value from excel macro running on a non-deltav workstation.
I wrote an excel OPC macro that is working well reading 240 data values each time .
I get these values from an application station employed for continuous historian (APP_B) that is not the proplus.

If I try to read the same data from the proplus (DVINST) I get the error above reported.
In other words if I try to read data from the ProPlus the OPC macro fails, if I read the same data form APP_B the OPC macro works well.
I tryed to investigate and I discovered that I get the same failure when I use the OPCWatchit.
Using OPWatchit interface I'm able to get data value if I use APP_B as server, as soon as I change server and select the ProPlus (DVINST) I get this error: "Exceeded OPC Server license limit. Item not added. "
It is very strange, I was thinking about a failure on the macro but I'm sure it is working well.
According to me there is an issue on the PROPLUS and I'm not able to solve it.
    Thank you.

The DeltaV Excel Add-in PDS provides an explanation of OPC data access licensing for workstations. This license can be added to the Pro Plus or other workstations and unlocks the OPC server to 500 tags. There is also an OPC Excel Add-in license listed in the system planning guide, but I'm not sure how this relates to the OPC Server, 250 Data Values.
The DeltaV Excel Add-in can be assigned to any DeltaV workstation type, enabling access to 500 items on the OPC Data Access Server.

    This is from the PDS:
For Professional Plus and Application Stations the DeltaV Excel Add-in and the DeltaV OPC Data Access Server licenses are mutually exclusive (i.e. these licenses cannot reside on the same workstation). The DeltaV Excel Add-in license includes a 500 item OPC Data Access Server license and the OPC Data Access Server license includes the DeltaV Excel Add-in functionality. If the OPC Data Access Server license is used to provide the DeltaV Excel Add-in functionality, the DeltaV Excel Add-in has access to all the OPC items available in the OPC Data Access Server
license (e.g. 250 items on the Professional Plus and up to 30,000 items on the Application Station).

    Andre,
    Thank you.
My understanding is that I shall provide the Proplus with DeltaV Excel Add-in license.
    Is that correct?
