Start Small: How Little Data Leads to Big Data and Makes IIoT Real

Everyone talks about big data, but far fewer people are actually using it. In fact, only about 1% of the collected industrial data is currently employed in decision-making. That unfortunate statistic can change rapidly if users understand and employ the little data strategy.

In a recent video made by Emerson’s Derek Thomas, he explains that big data is actually dependent on and made up of smaller chunks of data called little data that are collected and analyzed at the machine edge. While big data is expensive to implement, needs organizational alignment, and requires a long-term commitment, little data addresses known problems with defined parameters, provides rapid local integration, and enables a fast, affordable entry into the world of IIoT.
