Upgrade DV while renaming all servers

All,

We are upgrading a legacy DeltaV system to version 14.3.1.  During this process we want to update all the server names, including the Proplus, to the server naming convention to conform to global standards. Is it possible to do this?  Our local Emerson office is engaged to assist with the project, but we are now 6 months into the project and they have now informed us it is impossible to rename the Proplus and that we must keep the old server name.  They are refusing to engage further, stating that if they rename it our system will no longer be supported.

We have a live system at version 12.3.1 running virtual machines.  We froze the database and have upgraded it using the migration tool.

We have built a new virtual environment with all new servers at version 14.LTS (14.3.1) with the server names we wish to have.

We envisioned our options being:

1. Do partial imports of the migrated database to preserve the naming convention of the new servers.  This must be done carefully to prevent as many errors as possibe.  Our local office is refusing to perform this action.

2. Bring the migrated database into the new system, overwriting our new server nodes, and go through the process of renaming them.

        a. Our Emerson team had originally agreed to this plan and have now come back and said this option isn't supported.

Can anyone provide insights as to other options we may have?  We need to have our new server environment and node names conform to our global standards.  We are far enough along in the process now that the server names are already documented in dozens of places, including global systems for registering servers and applications.

  • Assume you have Domain. Are you implementing IDDC in v14? I recommend it.

Is this an online change or will you be off line?

Anyway, my approach would be to standup the new IDDC servers and transfer roles to these. Then demote the Proplus and have it leave the domain. Uninstall the current version(after making all necessary backups. Rename the machine and install v14 joining the domain in the process. then import the migrated FHX, and restoring the powerup folder and such.

At this point you can start updating your workstations. Rename a station in DV explorer and create new devdata file. Stop DV service and set to manual start. Leave the domain and after reboot install v14. the workstation will be renamed in workstation config and will rejoin the domain.

You can also upgrade stations first to v14, then do the rename in explorer, stop services and set to manual, leave domain and rerun workstation config with new name, and computer will rejoin domain during wkstn config.

I would strongly recommend testing to work out details.
