Upgrade from 13.3 to 13.3.1

Hi,

We are currently version 13.3, windows 7 pro, servers are server2008, and wish to upgrade to 13.3.1 to be able to apply a patch for our MX controller. The patch is of great safety importance and is recommended by Emmerson.

We need to know whether the upgrade would e applied by a patch, or whether a complete system upgrade is required, in which case we may consider v14.

Best regards

Lee.

  • I don't know when the end of life for v13.3.0 but I can guess that it already not supported.

Assuming that v13.3.0 is not supported anymore, you can apply v13.3 SP1. You should still have support of v13.3.1 at this point and therefore apply MX patch.

The supported path is to upgrade to v13.3.1. Some Hotfixes require workstations to be updated as well. Others affect the comm layer and all nodes should be updated. Some are local to the node itself. They are also released cumulatively, meaning that the new controller hotfix was tested and released on the versions stated.

If you were to flash the controller on a separate test system that was at v13.3.1, that would get your controller updated, but if you then installed it on v13.3, what other problem might arise? You could try this, but know that any new issue created will be resolved by installing v13.3.1 on the system. i.e. that would not be supported (standard practice is to always flash your controllers and IO cards to the version installed on the Pro Plus. )

The decision is a balance of risk and cost. The supported migration to v14.3.1 (online) is v13.3.1 or 12.3.1. v13.3.0 can be migrated to v14.3.1 directly as an offline upgrade. You then need to determine if there are any hardware implications to migrate to the new Windows 10 OS or if you have MD controllers that will require replacement. applying v13.3.1 may be less of a disruption and sets you up to migrate to v15 on a supported path.

I like v14. The PK control is a game changer, and we have DeltaV Live as well as the OPC UA options. But for a production system, if you do not have direct need for any of these new features, the v13.3.1 is a valid path to addressing your immediate MX controller issue. If you can go to v14.3.1, that opens some new choices for your future needs.

Thanks for your response, the reason for the question is Emerson have recommended an emergency hotfix on the MX controller for safety reasons, the MX controller may freeze, we cannot use this hotfix on V13.3, we need V13.3.1 at least.
My only question was, is the upgrade to 13.3.1 available as a patch?
If not then we may have to perform a system upgrade again. Our last on was 2016.
