Recommended migration path from DeltaV v 12.3 on Windows Server 2012 physical machines to DeltaV v14.3 on Windows Server 2016 virtual machines.

Has anyone seen a published migration path that includes accomplishing all of the following:

  • updating the OS from Windows Server 2012 to Server 2016
  • transitioning from physical servers to VMs
  • and migrating from DeltaV 12.3 to 14.3 ?

I've found a lot of the pieces, but I'm not clear what the best order would be, or if there are any additional issues I might have to take into account.

Thanks.

Each Cluster will need to be destroyed and recreated as Microsoft does not support 2012 and 2016 Nodes in the same Cluster.

With redundant hardware(multiple clusters and/or standalone hosts) you can keep DeltaV running through the entire process.

For Physical Servers to VM Migration, DVS 3.3 has the capability to capture important data and configuration, create a new VM, and restore that data.

Details of Execution require running the System Capture tool on the original Physical Server, then there is a "Create VM from Physical" function on the DVS Client which will use the Capture to create a VM.

More details are in DeltaV Virtual Studio 3.3 Books Online.

There are many considerations that require knowledge of your existing installation and your operational uptime requirements for upgrades that would go into designing an execution strategy.
