Adding New Fieldbus Device Types to DeltaV

Dear All,

I would like to ask you how can Add New Fieldbus Device Types to DeltaV ?

Thank you

  • 1st you have to download the required DD file. Extract it. Go to libraries in deltav explorer, right click on communication type and select add new device type. Import it from the location where you saved the extracted file.
  • I am assuming that you have the new device type DD. If yes: go to DeltaV Explorer, navigate to the Fieldbus Library on the very top left, right click on the Fieldbus and select add device type. You will now need to browse to your new dd. If this dd has followed the foundation Fieldbus standard, it should import.
  • In DeltaV explorer, locate Library. Underneath it is Device Definitions, which should contain a category for Fieldbus Devices. Right click that category and select Add Device Type. It should then prompt you to browse to the file for the type you're importing in windows.

  • The procedure is the same as it is for HART / WirelessHART.

Obtain "device descriptions", ideally from the Emerson website. I tried to find them on the website but failed . . . :( .

You will have a small directory of files for a specific device. Using whatever means is allowed (we used a dedicated USB stick) transfer the files from an internet-connected PC to a DeltaV workstation.

From the ProPlus or other engineering-capable node, sign in as an administrator and open "DeltaV Explorer", which should load your project's database. If it isn't doing this, you need other help.

Open "library" and expand devices definitions. Right-click on "Fieldbus" and choose "add device type". Point the resulting dialog box to the file location (e.g., USB stick). Select the directory containing the files. You will most likley see some warnings about "adding a device type that had not been tested" or words to that effect. I can't tell you to ignore this warning, but DeltaV versions 10 and later have all been certified by FieldComm Group to function with registered (device's) DD's. Consult your LBP if you still feel shy about it. I think the meaning is, if you obtain some nutty device with some shabby DD, it's not Emerson's fault if your system behaves in an unacceptable fashion. I always get the warning even with Emerson brands. Do you think I have ever not clicked "OK"?

Search on device kit installation from Emerson.
Then you can select the fieldbus type, device manufacturer, Host manufacturer, FF revision and so on. If you can share data I can send you the link

Hmm. It used to be that within DeltaV, you were required to obtain the device kit from the Emerson website. This may only be for HART devices, as DeltaV defined the extended alerts. It appears for FF you only need the DD. Nice.

On the Emerson download site, you are asked for the device information, bus protocol, AMS version and DeltaV version. If a download shows up, that means the device is not included in the defined release version of DeltaV or AMS. If the device does NOT show up, it is either included in the AMS/DeltaV version you defined, or it has never been validated by Emerson. If you set the DeltaV Version to an older version and the device shows up, that tells me it is now included in later versions of DeltaV. If it does not show up for any version of DeltaV, you need to go to the FF website or manufacture for the DD.

Note, I may be mixing the behavior for HART devices here... If I'm off point, hopefully someone will correct me.

Enter "DeltaV" in the search field. Select the DD for the device and your version of DeltaV (e.g.13.3.1).

You can also find certified / tested DD's here:

I'm searching for the Rosemount 3244MV Temperature Transmitter Rev 3 FF DeltaV V12 I found this link but im still searching

    Thank you Mr Saleh
  • In reply to Hichem Ben Kàab :

    Sorry I read 3144 - not 3244.

The rev 3 DD should have shipped with your version 12 system . . . I see there's no DD specifically for v12 but we have fieldbus 3244's from 20 years ago that commission fine in 13.3.1.

I would try the ones for version 10. I bet they will work.

Curiously, the 3244 is no longer listed as a registered device on fieldbus.org . . .
