No matter how robust your organization’s cybersecurity defenses may be, there is always a chance that an unanticipated directed attack will catch you off-guard. Part of maintaining a clean cybersecurity bill of health is being prepared to recover quickly in the event of an incident.
The speed with which you bounce back from a cybersecurity breach is directly proportional to the time you spent preparing for such an incident. Keeping an eye on the following factors can help you be prepared for the worst-case scenario:
1. Back up your data regularly and verify that data is useable
- Schedule automatic backups, ensuring that the data is regularly backed-up
- Store these backup files away from the control system, preferably at an off-site location (if possible)
2. Develop and implement a Cybersecurity Incident Response Plan
- Know what to do before an event happens – you perform fire drills periodically, don’t you?
- While this action is only used in the case of a breach or infection, it is important to quickly take effective action
- Define the process of identification, triage, containment and forensic investigation of a cyber-event before you need to use it
- Practice, practice, practice.
