Anyone flashed the firmware in their RM100 switch? How much fun was that?

So in recent versions of DeltaV we have the "Network Device Command Center" where you can view any(?) managed switches, such as the RM100, which includes a feature to "lock down" the switch, considered a good / best practice for physical security of the network. KBA NK-1600-0002 recommends flashing the firmware from to version 08.0.13. The procedure described in the referenced KBA involves Hirschmann cables and some command-line interaction to load the new firmware, however . . .

If one clicks / right-clicks a commissioned switch in the "Network Device Command Center", a menu appears which includes "Advanced Device Operations". One of the options there is "Upgrade Firmware". Seems much nicer than messing with Hirschmann cables and command-line interfaces.

Has anyone used this utility? How long does it take the switch to reboot, and what happens to all the operator stations when it does? Our operations folks are not fond of looking at magenta "&&&&&" where they used to see process measurements.

The facility in question is running 13.3.1.

  • This is a new feature in v13. Previously, you needed a laptop with a serial cable.

Have not tried this, but will be upgrading my demo in the coming weeks.

Since the DeltaV network is redundant, your operators should continue to see good data while you upgrade a switch, as long as you don't do the primary and secondary switches together. I would recommend doing one network first, and make sure you have good communication on the secondary. Your controllers have a couple of diagnostics under the Primary and Secondary communications showing number of good and Bad connections. Both the primary and secondary should be showing 0 bad connections and if all nodes have redundant communcitions you should see the same number of Good Connections. If you have any bad connections, you can pull up the Device Connection list and see which nodes are indicating connection problem. Sometimes a node has been removed but controllers have not reset since and there can be a valid bad connection. You have to reset (switchover) the controller to clear these.

In any case, if your network is healthy, you can upgrade switches without loss of view.
