Can you use a mixture of multimode and single mode 8-port expansion modules within same RM100 smart switch?

My question is can you use a mixture of multimode and single-mode fiber 8-port expansion modules within 1 RM100 smart switch?  Any issues there?  Any benefits or reasons not to convert over existing multimode fiber runs to single-mode fiber runs?

Part numbers VE6049M02 and VE6049M03.

  • RM100s can have any combination of media modules. You don't need to use the same modules across, and they are defined per use case. Obviously, the VE6049M02 will provide you 8x 100Mbps multi-mode fiber ports and the VE6049M03 will provide you 8x 100Mbps single-mode fiber ports. If you are looking for more granularity within the same media module, you could go with the VE6049M04 which has 8x SFP ports so you get to choose the fiber connection per port. All media modules are 100Mbps though, so if you need higher speed, then another type of switch is required (e.g. VE6053 or VE6054 for example).

As far as single-mode vs multi-mode, in my opinion the main difference is price: SFPs, cables, media modules, etc. are more expensive for single-mode, so if you don't have a need for single-mode, I'd still use multi-mode.
