Related to serial card communication loss and Charm HART functionality issue

Hi,

Please, anybody can share their experience if they had the same experience at the site for the below 2 queries.

1). A third party system is connected with DeltaV(11.3V) through serial cards. Once that third party system power goes off and then come up, the DeltaV particular serial devices Overall integrity went bad which is not coming up normal position without download the serial card.

2).DVC fisher valve is connected with Analog output charm for the partial stroke test which is supposed to be working when we use charm type as "Analog output 4-20mA with HART" but here this type of configuration is not working whereas the same charm if selected as "analog output 4-20mA" is working same like control valve. Thus, I could not move forward to partial stroke test.

Let me have any valuable solution for the above issues.

Thanks in advance.

  • For the serial card problem can you post the settings you have in DeltaV? Specifically the advanced and communications tabs of the port properties. Also what is the slave device and is the card redundant.
  • Vinu, Thanks for posting this here. Much better forum than Facebook...

The DVC positioner comes with different tiers for diagnostics, and there is an SIS version that supports partial stroke tests. Configuring the CHARM for 4-20 mA with HART enables HART communication so you can communicate with the device using AMS, or to use the HART_FIELD_VAL and HART Variables in you configuration. It still uses a 4-20 mA signal.

There was an issue where DVC positioners were shipping with a default scale of 4-20 mA, and when the AO block is configured for 0-100%, this caused issues. To correct, one would need to connect to the DVC using AMS device manager or a Hand held and set the scale to 0-100% in the positioner. If the channel is configured to be 4-20 mA (with no HART), the device scale is ignored and the channel works.

When you Auto Sense the device on the CHARM with HART enabled, DeltaV will check and configure the channel with the device information, and this allows AMS to use the correct DD when communicating with the device. If DeltaV has the wrong DD or no DD defined, the device will show a device mismatch error, and AMS will not work properly. Once you've sensed the device and downloaded, you can communicate with AMS to set the proper scale in the device. We typically set the device scale 0-100 to match the AO block in DeltaV so that the valve position is shown as 0-100 %. Setting the DeltaV AO block to 4-20 mA to match the device should work, but then the AO block range will be 4-20, and your PID block OUT SCALE will need to match the AO block and the PID faceplate will have 4-20 mA on the OUT scale and ..... Best to just set the device to 0-100%.

Is this an SIS DVC or a regular DVC? I thought the Partial Stroke Test was only available on the SIS DVC. This is a two state DVC where a signal less than 12 mA closes the valve and above 12 mA opens the valve. The regular DVC is a modulating positioner, so Partial Stroke is not really a necessity since the valve is typically modulating and so would face the same issue of being open for 3 years without ever being commanded to close, and thus getting stuck there. If the valve does support PST, then you want to have HART enabled so that you can set up the partial stroke test parameters and be able to retrieve results of the tests. Most importantly, you want to know if a PST fails, which would be reported in the Plantweb alerts in DeltaV and AMS.

So, Enable HART on the CHARM, download.
AUto Sense device and resolve any issues shown in the reconcile dialog
Check the DVC scale is 0-100% using AMS DM or handheld 475 communicator
Once you get the HART communication working, you can then setup Partial Stroke test interval and %signal.

Hi Mike..Slave devices are control valves around 5 valves( 4 valves are limitorque & 1 is fisher) via multidrop connectivity from DeltaV serial cards. Setting baud rate 9600,RS-485 duplex communication. parity = none.
