Automatically Enable/Disable alarms due to process downtime

Dear all,

Hope some of you could help us with this point.

During our process downtime, some alarms (just like low or low low alarms) for flow, level and pressure indication starts.

Are there anyway to automatically disable this low or low low alarms during process shutdown?

Best regards.

  • Of course you can automatically disable alarms, but the question is what criteria do you want the control system to use to do this in an efficient and accurate manner?

You can write supervisory modules that enable/disable alarms based on your specific process conditions. Many system owners write equipment modules or phase/recipes that specifically handle shutdown or startup sequences which include the dynamic enable/disable of alarms. There is almost no limit to how you can manipulate the enable, priority, or suppression of alarms in the controller logic, but the logic has to be written.

There is no out of-the-box way to disable all alarms for a unit or for an area, but you can filter alarms based on unit/area in the operator interface. Filtering doesn't disable the alarm, it just prevents annunciation.

Emerson is working with Exida on several alarm rationalization and streamlining products to use configurable grouping and suppression of alarms to make this engineering effort easier and consistent.
