Enabling Windows server backup on Proplus

Hi Gentelmen

We have Deltav 11.3.1 DeltaV system runing in our plant in a domain network. As per our back up policy, it is required to enable windows server backup by adding the feature in windows server 2008 R710 Machine. I would like to know if enabling windows server back up on proplus at this moment requrires any special consideration. Like any adverse impact on DeltaV or the domain network.

Note: This is a DeltaV Batch System.

Regards,

Manzoor

  • Manzoor,

I don't yet have experience with v11.3.1 running on Server 2008 yet, but did use the ASR backup on Server 2003 extensively. This was by no means our only backup method as it wasn't "supported" by Emerson. However, it was successful in each test we made and was easier to restore than the Emerson suggestion to reinstall windows, install DeltaV and then restore application.

You may want to explore the Acronis offering through Emerson for backups.

You stated "As per our back up policy, ...". I would recommend that for any system (PC, Server, PLC, etc.) used for process control at your site(s) have a backup policy customized for that implementation or at least flexible enough to follow the vendor's recommendation. The requirement should be for a method to restore the complete system, not to specify Windows Server Backup vs. another utility.

  • I can't find anything specifically stating not to do this, but I also cannot find any statements regarding support for this. For a supported backup and recovery solution, see the following white papers:

Restoring domains can be problematic if you are running more than one DC. Even using ghost, a restored DC will not play nice with the existing DCs. From all attempts we have done, I end up reinstalling DV to ensure a reliable system.

Can I know what is the ASR backup?. At the moment we do not have Acronis backup & recovery set up with us.

Regarding the back up policy, it is still in its nascent stages & we would be keen to incorporate more methods of back up & recovery & test them.Since windows backup & restore is an inexpensive solution, so have have been thinking about it. There are many other windows options like repair disks & System images. What about that , can anyone or you please enlighten on this. Can we use the repair disks & systems images to restore DeltaV Batch systems.

Has anybody used the system images created through windows recovery application to restore DeltaV systems ?

    Thanks

    Thanks for your reply.

I went through the 2 links. I do not know if we have any further budgetary allocations remaining for our control system at the moment. But I shall be speaking about this with my superior.

Even I did not find anything in BOL about whether we can enable windows server back up & use it for restoring DeltaV Ssytems. I would be really thankful if any body can give some insight on this. Since this is running system, so I am being cautious of doing it on my own.

    Manzoor,
You did not find anything in BOL or any other documentation because it is not a supported method of backing up and restoring DeltaV systems. That is not to say that it will or will not work, just that it has not been tested and is not supported. Especially on a running system, I would be a little wary of trying something like this, as the GSC or Emerson will not be able to help you if something does go wrong.

The Acronis B&R solution that Emerson offers has pre-configured templates for how to back up and restore all the different DeltaV nodes and roles, so it's a nice, comprehensive package that enables you to quickly set up something that you know will work and will be supported.
