Process History View Filtering - a more intuitive way?

I had a client ask me today, "Is there a way to filter the event log?"  Of course I said, and then sat down and showed him the "Modify filter.." button.  But he insisted, "No, that's not filtering.  Filtering is removing the junk.  I need to get rid of all the stuff I don't need to see, and take a look at what's left."  For example?  A few nuisance alarms are coming in and going out, can we see everything but those?  Can we do exclusive filtering?

  • I don't think the customer wants to just "Filter the events". He may need to have a look at the PDS for "DeltaV Analyze" & whitepapers on "Alarm Management" & "Alarm Rationalization".

Could not find a way to attach them here, but you can find these documents easily on Emerson websites.

You could always use alarm suppressing?

Or you could "disable" the alarm from the details faceplate.

The right thing to do is to fix the bad actors. Start by putting some conditional alarming in place to not allow the alarm to reoccur unless some time has elapsed. If it's chattering then you should inspect the switch to see why, is it operating too close to it's alarm setting, is it vibrating excessively, etc. Something is making the alarm go in and out so fix that then you may not need to filter.

I just wanted to add a note on how to add a file or picture to your post or reply to a post. First select "Use rich formatting":

Then, you can add pictures, videos, cleaned up cut & pastes from Word or email, etc. with these buttons:

Add files by clickin on the Options tab, and upload your file.

All that said, it may be better to hyperlink to a document if it already exists some where on the web. To do that just select your text and hit the hyperlink button:

Hope this helps and enjoy your weekend!

I wish you could specify NOT(whatever) in PHV.  When I need to do this, I use SQL queries directly on the EJOURNAL table.  SELECT * WHERE COLUMN NOT LIKE '%WHATEVER%'

I agree, the better proposition is the clean up the alarm mess.  It will improve the performance of the client, reduce storage and processing overhead, but most importantly represent a tremendous step towards true control of the process.

Unfortunately you can only fix nuisance alarms AFTER the fact.  If you open up the event log and find some there, you should be able to filter them OUT.  And sometimes I don't want to see every .MACK .NALM , etc for every alarm.

Suppressing an alarm doesn't stop it from logging and disabling can only be done after the a fact.

I've also seen scenarios where you want to filter OUT part of the plant.  If you have a trip with one unit that makes a mess of the event log you should be able to filter it out to see what was happening in the rest of the plant.

I know I've ran into this question before from clients and I usually just run a "NOT =" query on the sql database, but I was just wondering if we had found a native way.

Youssef, Thanks for letting me know. Let me set up a private area to try this again. If you're getting some kind of error, I'd like to get the Telligent support team on the case. You'll receive a message with access to the test area.
