DeltaV Simulate and VMware

I’ve been trying to set up a DeltaV Simulate system running on a VMware virtual machine.  Everything has installed fine, but I can’t get DeltaV to read the USB security key.  I’ve tried all the settings in VMware that I can find, and I’ve tried doing things in different orders, but whenever I plug the key in, the host machine seems to grab it, leaving VMware unable to disconnect it from the host and connect to it.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

  • Hi Neil

I've tryed it a few years later and I think that you have to :

    - Add "USB Device" in the VM configuration parameters (when guest machine is shutdown)

I think USB 1.1 compatibility is required

    - Start your guest machine

    - Plug the key on the host machine

    - On the VM machine, the USB key may appears on the VMWare toolbar à click or right-click on it to mount the USB device.

Normally, this USB key is captured by VMWare for the usage on this guest OS (no more accessible from host).

Since DeltaV v.9 I've also installed a number of DeltaV VM's and the main problem is usually the host machine.

The host also needs to successfully detect the dongle before it can be transferred to the VM. By checking the device manager (on host) there should be something like 'Safenet Inc. Hardlock Key'  listed under USB controllers. If there's an unknown USB device listed instead, the Aladdin Hardlock drivers need to be installed first. Either download from Aladdin site or use DeltaV package.

Like Jack suggests the VM configuration should have the 'USB Controller' device, support for USB 2.0 devices can be checked as well as auto-connect. (This is more or less done by default when creating a new VM with VMware Workstation.)

With VM running in the menu 'VM -> Removable Devices' the 'Aladdin Knowledge Hardlock USB 1.02' should be listed and be connectable to the VM. (The host cannot really grab the device and doesn't show up in the 'safely remove hardware' list.)

Alternatively, you can grab the focus to the VM first and insert the dongle, then the VM should detect the dongle directly instead of the host-machine. (Only works if auto-connect USB is enabled.)

    Hope this helps,

    Cheers,

    Robert

    Possibly related to Roberts reply

I've had this problem with a windows 7 host and XP Guest machine using VM workstation 7. Perhaps early VMPlayer versions of the same era also had the problem?

It turned out to be that The VM version didn't support the USB 3 ports of my windows 7 laptop. suggest you try/confirm it's a host USB 2 port or try the latest version of VM. I upgraded to VM Workstation 8 and haven't suffered since.

    just thoughts

    good luck.
