Modbus Communication

Hi ALL

Our customer has 3rd part PLC A, and B each PLC is connected with 5 Packages so now we have 5 packages connected to A and 5 Package connected to B, the communication between the 3rd party and DeltaV through VIM2, the question is during configuration VIM we should create one device for each PLC with use IP for PLC A and PLC B , then from DeltaV explorer for example under C57 create Dataset for each package, also is the device address has an effect on communication.

Please need your support to understand this matter

  • This is somewhat based on preference. If you think about the layout, you really have two separate communication pathways, DeltaV/VIM to PLC and then from PLC to remote devices. The VIM to the PLC really doesn't care if you separate by card, address, etc, as long as it's laid out in a way that makes sense. If it were me, I would generally lean towards separate datasets for each device and lay them out on the cards in DeltaV to be grouped logically. Maybe PLC A under card 57 and 58, PLC B under card 59 and 60 so you have future expansion. As long as it works, with a single VIM to two end devices, there's not a lot of advantage except for your user organization to the different ways it could be laid out.
