Dell Precision Tower 5810 hangs at "Dell" logo after reboot

Running the "batch" scripts for Windows 10 security patches (January edition), DeltaV 14.LTS. After script-initiated reboot, a long period of "Restarting" swirling ping-pong balls ensues, finally reboots, but hangs at the "Dell" logo. Eventually initiated a hard reboot (front pushbutton) and once again hangs on the logo. 2nd hard reboot and it finally boots to Windows (Enterprise 2016 LTSB) version 10.0.14393.

This is the script that checks for prerequisites (SQL patches) before proceeding with the remaining security patches.

13 GB free disk space on "C"; 188 GB free on "D".

Any thoughts whether this is a hardware issue or "normal"?

  • No resolution but have seen this as well on a January PM, including a 5820. Have not seen that behavior on prior patches.

Happening again today after applying BIOS updates downloaded from Dell. Cycled power 4-5 times (including pulling the power supply).
Curious if there's any info on this.

Poked around the Dell support community site a bit; one solution recommended disabling fast startup. This must be a "Group Policy" thing in the DeltaV domain because I don't see the setting.

It might be an option if you can access the BIOS and change it there. Why would a DCS workstation that is (hopefully) rarely rebooted need the fast startup?
