1410 wireless gateway with AMS

We have a 1410 wireless gateway that is currently working with DeltaV. We can communicate with the web interface.  AMS ans AMS SECURE is selected in the web interface under Protocols.

The problem is getting the device to show up in AMS.  I would like to see it show up under DeltaV Network as "assigned wireless".  But it does not.

  • TreyB, the 1410 Wireless Gateways do not have the DeltaV Ready option and therefore are not natively integrated into DeltaV. You need to add an interface called "Wireless Network" in AMS (under AMS Device Manager / Network Configuration) so that AMS can communicate with this gateway directly and not through DeltaV. This option is normally when DeltaV is not the control system where the Gateway is connected, and therefore the Gateway is displayed right at the top of the topology in AMS (under the created Wireless Network interface).

Data exchange between DeltaV and the 1410 Wireless Gateway is not done via DeltaV protocol, so you would still need to map the wireless data via Modbus, OPC, etc. using EIOCs or VIMs, and therefore technically your 1410 Gateway would reside on a network other than the DeltaV Area Control Network.

The 1420 Wireless Gateway and the WIOC can be natively integrated into DeltaV and provide seamless integration of wireless data into your DeltaV system.

Are we supposed to have licensing? Under network configuration we do cannot select wireless networks. Only, HART Modem and DeltaV Network is available. I read that if it does not show up that it is not licensed. I assume the "seamless" integration with AMS is achieved once the wireless network is created? Should the gateway have come with licensing for this out the box?

You are probably missing the AMS license that enables the Wireless Network connection type (this is not a Gateway license), you can get that from your local Emerson sales office. The 1410 Gateway does not have the option for DeltaV native integration, which is only available today for 1420 Gateways and WIOCs. When you use 1420 Gateways (with the DeltaV Ready option enabled) or WIOCs, they are seamlessly integrated into DeltaV with no other changes required.

Follow up question. How would we go about configuring the devices. It seems that without having AMS license we cannot do so without using a hand held such as a 475 communicator. The AMS Wireless Configurator software does not appear to want to install over our existing AMS13. Apparently that software can not be run in parallel to an existing AMS installation? So, what good is it? Would I be able to install the AMS Wireless Configurator on a different laptop and configure without a license? If so, then I am better off using the handheld. Will also have to look into pricing on that license.

    Thanks

    Hello Trey,

The AMS Wireless Configurator is a subset of the full AMS Device Manager application.  That is why they cannot coexist on the same system.

As far as configuring the WirelessHART devices, there are a couple of things to consider:

    • Remote configuration - This requires the devices to already be communicating with the 1410 gateway and you will need the wireless interface license in AMS Device Manager.  The license is relatively inexpensive as long as you have enough system tags available.
    • Local configuration - This requires either a handheld communicator or a HART modem.  Your existing AMS Device Manager system will support a HART modem so you should not need to use the AMS Wireless Configurator.  You could also use a handheld like the 475 Field Communicator or the new AMS Trex Device Communicator www.emerson.com/trex

Long term I recommend you look at the Wireless Interface license for your AMS Device Manager system.  In addition to configuring the devices, you will be able to monitor them for diagnostics as well as power module status, etc...

    Hope this help.

    Trey,

Yes, you would I be able to install the AMS Wireless Configurator on a different laptop and configure WirelessHART devices without a license, (as long as that laptop did not have AMS Device Manager installed).
  • In reply to TreyB:

    Hi Trey.

WirelessHART was designed to allow you to use the same tools and skills that you already have for configuring wired devices. Whatever you use on site now with your wired Rosemount HART transmitters will work with your new WirelessHART transmitters (assuming that it is up to date with the latest device descriptors)

I am one of the Wireless Specialists in Australia and I have the full AMS13 on my laptop and a WirelessHART Modem - that is all I need to work with WirelessHART transmitters. Your options include:
    1) HART Modem and any one of the "Device Manager" variants
Note 1: Our preferred USB modem, and the one our field technicians use, is a Viator HART Modem. I inherited a Microflex USB HART modem from my predecessor and it works well for me. There are others available on the market which may or may not be supported by various software packages.
Note 2: "Device Manager" is part of the AMS Suite. Subsets include "Wireless Configurator" that comes with 14x0 Gateway's and "Device Configurator" that is from our RTU group for use with their "Field Tools 3.x" RTU configuration software. Only install *one* of these packages on any laptop or PC.
    2) TREX
    3) 475 HART Communicator
    4) Other vendor's HART Communicator with appropriate Device Descriptors installed
    5) Other vendor's HART Software with appropriate Device Descriptors installed and supported USB Modem

For me, I mostly run demonstrations and training courses in an office environment, so a laptop and USB modem suits. For a production environment, a handheld is advisable, as it gives you the flexibility to work in the field, rain or shine, and in hazardous areas. There are many options, so pick the one that will fit best with the job that you need to do.

As others have pointed out, "Wireless Configurator" is a subset of the full AMS. If you have AMS installed already, you do not need any new software. If you want to install Wireless Configurator on a separate laptop then you can do so as there is no licence required with that software. For people without AMS, Wireless Configurator was included in the Gateway box just to get them up and running.

There are licences available for AMS for managing wireless devices (beyond simple configuration) including the Wireless Snap On for network management. I suggest that you discuss these, and what they can offer you with your local AMS support team.

That first statement is the entire point. It doesn't work the same. The 1410 is not "deltav ready" and thus does not integrate the same as the 1420. With the 1420, when I have a gateway assigned to my control network, it automatically shows up on my AMS workstation in Device Manager. It is under my DeltaV Network. From there I can enter into configuration. If I do not have a separate machine and instead have the AMS installed on my Proplus station, I can access configuration by right clicking on the channel within Explorer. Either of these is acceptable.

However, the 1410 does not show up in my DeltaV Network on my AMS machine. I am required an additional license for the wireless interface as described above. I got a quote yesterday.

Your other suggestions are well known and are how we were able to commission these devices, however, like I said, it misses the point. We want to have remote access via our AMS machine, the same as we already do for the rest of our control network. It is useful to know that I can use the AMS configurator on a separate PC without a license. Although we generally have a 475 on site, so taking a laptop out into the field is not preferred.

    Thanks
