Back at the end of 2018, before GE Automation and Controls was officially a part of Emerson, IoT World Today conducted an interesting interview with Vibhoosh Gupta, senior staff manager, product management, Machine Automation Solutions, who said in that interview, “Our customers should expect OEMs to provide them with machines that can evolve over time. You need evolving control systems.” He went on to discuss the focus on applications over platform, giving a new view of the future of control systems in industrial automation.
In Gupta’s view, a control system should be able to not only offer traditional real-time deterministic control but also leverage data analytics at the edge to adapt over time. “That’s where the concepts of what we call ‘outcome optimizing controllers’ came into being,” he said. Industrial IoT devices should provide a short-term ROI while evolving to optimize that ROI in the long run, Gupta said.
Take a look at that challenging interview. Obviously, new ideas and products have been developing over the intermediate eight months and we’re bringing you news of those in every blog. If the article raises any questions, feel free to ask. We look forward to discussing these developments over the months ahead.
