Back in 2018, Smart Industry conducted an interview, focused on digital transformation, with Rich Carpenter who, at the time was general manager of GE Power’s control platforms and is now general manager, product management, Machine Automation Solutions, Emerson. It’s interesting how forward-looking this interview proved to be, such that the transformation Rich predicted is unfolding before us today. In the article, Rich talked in depth about the imminent IIoT transformation of industry and pointed to an example in the power industry. “The traditional approach was to arrive at 8 am and turn on the pump. The new approach is having the IIoT talk to the cloud, see the power prices and change the run times to get a 3% savings in in energy. They are seeing substantial savings based on those decisions.”
