ARITHMETIC function block for flow compensation

I need to TP-compensate some flows in my plant and was reading in DeltaV BOL regarding the ARITHMETIC function block. BOL states that the parameter ARITH_TYPE should be set to "flow compensation linear" if a mass flowmeter is used or "flow compensation square root" if the flowmeter is differential pressure. I'm curious as to why one would need to TP-compensate a mass flow meter. For example, doesn't a coriolis meter measure mass directly and independent of temperature and pressure? And which selection is correct for a vortex meter that is set up for units of SCFH?
