v13 monitor resolution

Hardware specs from April 2017 says that v13 supports 16:9.  However, it says that servers do not support 1920x1080.  This doesn't seem to make sense that the server would support these monitors aspect ratio, but only at a 1600x900 resolution.  Anyone have some details that seem to be unclear from the hardware spec sheet?

Thanks in advance

DeltaV Professional Plus can be installed on a Workstation or a Server class machine. The Workstation Pro Plus is usually for smaller systems which will use a Workgroup rather than a Domain. If a Domain is desired/required, then the Pro Plus must be a Server Class machine. Another reason to require a Server Class machine is if VCAT is required. VCAT uses SQL server, which can only be installed on a server OS. Technically, one can install Server OS on Workstation hardware,(or at least you could with Server 2003) but that is not a supported configuration.

Since the Server class machine is used primarily for Domains, it is highly recommended that direct access to the Domain Controller be limited, and as such, user workstations should be deployed for Engineering and Operations. Emerson does not recommend the RDP role if the Server is a Domain controller. So if the criteria is to have a single Engineering Station that can double as an Operator station, the solution would be to use a Workstation for the Pro Plus. If a server is required for Domain or SQL Server, then an Engineering Station should be deployed so the Domain controller is best protected.

That doesn't help if you've already purchased a Server and expected to use it for development of graphics. Although you can still develop 1920x1080 displays on the smaller 1680 monitors of the server, you have to deal with scroll bars and you cannot view them in run mode properly.

In Server 2003, Microsoft allowed a single Remote Desk Top session to connect to the Session 0, similar to workstations. Also, in earlier versions, 4:3 aspect ratio was the norm. The session 0 connection allowed a user to access the server from a workstation with high resolution monitors and actually do full display editing. With 2008R2, Microsoft no longer allows this free RDP session, and requires users to logon via licensed RDP sessions. And as you know, DeltaV requires these RDP sessions to be licensed in order to access DeltaV software. There is still a restricted Administrator RDP connection possible, but this is not recommended for regular access to the server, and I'm not sure if you can launch Operate on this connection.

Last year at Emerson Exchange, it was announced that DeltaV will remove the Domain Controller from the Professional Plus as an installation requirement. So this would allow the system to be a domain, but allow the Pro Plus to be a workstation. Again, this doesn't help you now, but this is partly in response to the changes in the server OS by Micorsoft and to meet Cyber Security recommendations.

So ultimately, we have to make a choice of hardware for the Pro Plus based on Domain/Workgroup security, SQL Server and number of concurrent users. If a Server is required, display development will require a 1920x1080 compatible station, which means an additional Pro License, either via an RDP client session, or a full blown Workstation.
