Data base connection

Dear all,

in my plant the ups failed so we resorted to using our blackstart gen as ups to power our pro plus server while work is going on to get the ups going. but eventually the black start gen developed problems too and we started having on and off erratic power supply to the system which shutdown the pro plus and controllers without going through the normal shutdown process this happened a couple of times before our power was restored to normalcy. when power was normalized, we powered the system the pro plus, app station and operator stations all came on and deltav operate runs fine on all. but when we tried to lunch explorer from the pro plus we got this message

"Connected with the database server but failed to open a database connection. please read read specific message below and take appropriate action.

Reason:

failed to open the database. please check the event log on the pro plus for details.

we checked the event log but all it says was error with time and date

it is a version 7.2

thanks

  • For us this error was a corrupted data base we had to go back to a backup copy to recover the database and be able to connect again. This has happened to us twice on power outages over the last 7 years.
  • Had same issue a couple of weeks ago. A quick way to handle this is to create a new database from a recent backup and set it to the active database.

we dont have a .hbk file but a deltav_system. fhx file can a backup made fron it?
  • In reply to wpettit@fce.com:

Please what is the procedure to load the backup database?
  • In reply to victor:

if you have a backup file you can load up from database admin backup/restore that is in a total crash otherwise you can import the system config file the .fhx files from explorer window hope am right
  • In reply to molly:

Thanks. But we cannot open explorer. Also we see the existing database in the harddrive.Do we make this old and load/create the back up database?
  • In reply to victor:

    1. Copy or move to safe destination or rename your database (DeltaV_System_org) and copy PowerUp directory just in case
    2. In DeltaV Administrator tools create new databse, set active
    3. Try to run DeltaV Explorer, if succesfully import your last .fhx file
    4. Just in case, restart DeltaV Explorer, logout, login, restart Pro+
    5. Probably you should download Pro+
    6. Now verify your logic, open online any Control Module

    I'am waiting for your response.
    I'm online

You will need to create a new database and make it active. Using since you have a.fhx file you can only restore using the Explorer. After creating a new database you will have access to the Explorer. Then do an import to get your configuration from the . fhx
  • In reply to victor:

Use your most recent .FHX backup. Open "Database Administration" and select "Create New Database". At the first window give your database a name. Select "Next". On the next window make sure "Create New Database" is selected (Not create new database from a backup). Click "Next". On the following window check the box for "Preserve Network Definition" and "From Existing Export File". Find the .FHX file you want to use and create the database. Once you've successfully done so, go to "Set Active Database", and on the Pop-Up window select "Change" and select the new database you just created from the .FHX backup.

We are ready to try this. But do we need a facility shutdown.Right now are facility is running, the application server is up and our operator station 1 is up.
  • In reply to victor:

What for do you need facility shutdown? For import/creacting database there is no need to shutdown
  • In reply to victor:

It's preferable if the facility is down, or very nearly down, especially where there may be safety considerations. You also need to try and account for any programming or tuning changes you have made since your last .FHX export. As a rule, I do the .FHX export every Sunday so that if I do lose changes they are only for the previous week. If at all possible, take down the facility. This whole exercise should take you just five minutes or so and you can then restart operations.

The system is tied to our fully automated gas plant. As you advised,i will do this during a short shutdown window.I will arrange for a brief ten minutes shutdown of the plant on Tuesday 14/3 or Wednesday 15/3 to carry out this procedure.Grateful to all for all your valuable assistance.I will give a feedback as soon as we do the procedure
  • In reply to Roman Kostuniak:

We prefer the shutdown option because of the sensitivity of our plant and this will be our first time of doing this.Thank you so much.
  • In reply to victor:

Word of Caution, what about your download statuses/POWERUP directory/fieldbus devices, are you planning on downloading the complete controllers after importing the database? This is the biggest problem with restoring an FHX on a production system, you can lose synchronization between online controllers and DB.

I would strongly suggest you contact the GSC to assist you during this procedure, there is a specific KBA for this and many things can go wrong. Cal the GSC so they can walk you through the procedure step-by- step.
