  • I suggest you begin by reading the release notes for EACH version upgrade. And of course contact GSC with any questions you might have after studying the release notes.

thanks for attention.at this stage I want to know that the basic rule and action for upgrading to delta V12.3 like as is it possible to direct upgrade from 8.4 to 12.3 or any fundamental steps for it.
  • I would strongly recommend you please discuss this upgrade with your local Emerson service representative as there are many things to consider in a DeltaV upgrade not just software/hardware. For example, you need to consider any advanced/special control applications, and how these will upgrade (or not).
  • In reply to MC_Chow:

As MC indicated. Get some support upgrading your DeltaV from DeltaV 8.4 to 12.3. If you want to maintain your current database and graphics, there are some migration paths that need to get done. If you don't follow those migration steps, you may be spending more time and cost trying to get back to where you started.
  • As others have said I would contact your Local Business Partner for support.
What I believe you are asking for is a quick synopsis of the process. Our last upgrade was from 7.4 to 11.3.

These are the three biggest issues I remember from our previous upgrade:

    Historian:
I don't remember where the break point is in DeltaV Historians. I believe after 7.4 is when DeltaV Historian was installed instead of PI.
Do you have a PI Historian or are you using the DeltaV Historian? If you have an original PI Historian in your DeltaV you will need to decide if you want to keep it or change to the new DeltaV Historian.
If you change to DeltaV Historian all previous PI data will be lost to DeltaV. If you have DeltaV Historian it will be much easier.

    Controllers:
Depending on what controllers you have in your system, you might not be able to make the jump to 12.3.
Again your LBP would have this info easily available. When we went to 7.4 we had to upgrade from M5+. At 11.3 I believe everything had to be MD.
Emerson is pushing the roll out of MQ's so you would be advised to verify the controller requirements.

    PCs:
What software are you running on your PCs. 11.3 will only run on 32 bit. 12.3 will run on 32 or 64 WIndows 7. 13.3 is 64 bit only.
Depending on the age of your systems a PC upgrade may also be required.

I know there are several details I have omitted, but these were the biggest hurdles we faced.

Yes, we did bring a LBP person on site to complete the install.

I started to write you a more detailed list of thing to consider and realized how pointless that would be. At best I might point out things you need to do, but more likely would end up misleading you on things that don't matter. And if 10 people in this forum do the same, you would be mired in possibilities but not progress in your decisions.

There are too many areas that require discussion to be covered here, and the best advice is(as per MC above) is to seek out assistance from you local Emerson Service provider. By skipping so many releases, you've got more planning and research to do, and you'll want someone with experience on your team.

  • Hi Moji,
DeltaV allows to jump max 2 versions at once, so if you are upgrading from V8.4 to V12.3, you will have to upgrade to v9 - v11 - v12 or v10 - v12, depending on your system. Check the KBA NK-1300-0118.
But, as everybody said, I'd strongly recommend you to contact the GSC or your Local Emerson Office. There are so many details to cover before an upgrading (DeltaV versions, OS, Historian, CTRLs, Hotfixes...) that would be better to get assistance from them.
    Good luck!
  • Hi,

DeltaV Disk 2 (usually) has a file called DeltaVUpgrade.chm. This file gives you all the information required to plan and implement a DeltaV upgrade project. As most people have already pointed, you will need to upgrade DeltaV components in an approved (meaning tested by Emerson folks and confirmed) path steps. Additionally you will have to consider the upgrade options for DeltaV continuous historian, OPC connections (if applicable), AMS Installation (If applicable), PI connections and any other third party application that you want to upgrade.

Emerson/Local business partner should be able to advise you on license upgrades/merging as few concepts of license utilization have changed over time and you might benefit from the new philosophies for what it is worth. In case of graphics upgrade I will recommend to check details about Dumpdatasources utility and fix related errors at this point of time as well.

If you change from the legacy PI Historian (default in DeltaV prior to 7.4.2) you should not lose your history upon converting to the DeltaV Continuous Historian. Reference KBA Article NK-1400-0477 for information on how to convert the PI archives to a format compatible with the DVCH archives.

as you said upgrading step is limited up to 2 version, for 7.4 version is v9-v11-v12 yes?
