Alarm Management - DV 11.3 Device hardware alarms.

We are in the middle of Alarm Management. We are trying to reduce the number of alarms for operations, of course. We have created a new Area and assigned the CIOC and Device to the new area, attempting to get the hardware alarms on a session and not the operator workstation, but it is not working. Maybe someone can provide some support on how to do this. Under the Pro+ the new areas are under the remote sessions. Just to repeat myself, we want the process alarms on the operator workstation and the device hardware alarms on the session.

  • The new area is simply for device alarms, correct? Are you seeing any alarms on the sessions, or just the process alarms, or both?
Do you have at least AREA_A assigned to the Alarms and events of the Pro+ session host?
  • Have you re-configured the CIOC and controller node properties to annunciate hardware alarms through your new area? By default, all nodes in the Physical Network are created to pass hardware alarms through AREA_A. If you want to have these come through, for example, AREA_B, you would need to edit the placeholder properties and download setup data to all Physical Network and RIO nodes.

Yes, just for the Hardware alarms. We are not getting any alarms from the Pro+ when we tested the hardware failure of a valve and a level transmitter. Yes, Area_A is assigned to Alarms and Events as well as other areas. Although, we tried to un-assign the area we wanted the alarms from and that didn't help. So yes, we had at least Area A assigned.

Silly question, but does the current DeltaV user also have the appropriate keys for the new area?
  • In reply to Youssef.El-Bahtimy:

Yes, the users have the correct keys.

Is your pro-plus also a chronicle?  Can you see the alarms in the pro plus chronicle?

What priority are your hardware alarms set to?  Is it possible they are set to an auto-acknowledging type?

  • In reply to Youssef.El-Bahtimy:

The alarm priorities are Advisory, Critical and Warning. The only auto-acknowledged alarm is the Advisory. Even if it was acknowledged it would still show in the banner. We are dealing with more than just advisory, though. We have tried assigning the controller, session, CIOC/WIOC, and the workstation areas and events to the new area, made sure the hardware alarms are enabled, and tested them. We still haven't been able to get any of the hardware alarms in the new area.

Open the AlarmFilt display and verify that the Checkbox for the associated area(s) are checked and also not greyed out.

If this is greyed out, close operate, logoff as DeltaV user (not the machine) and then re-open workspace and log back in as a DeltaV user.

Here is a pic of what it should look like - except the area names of course :)

The workstation settings contain the threshold priority for alarms to include in the alarm banner and by extension to the alarm list. The threshold is different for each source; for process modules, system hardware alerts and device alerts. It may be worth examining the threshold settings in the UserSettings file. It's a bit tricky to describe exactly where this file is so before attempting to do so, are you familiar with this file?

Do the alarms appear in Process History View?
Have you downloaded changed setup data to the pro-plus since making the changes?
Using WATCHIT, can you view the value of THISUSER/ALARMS[n] where n is 1 - 100 and determine if your alarms appear anywhere in this array? (my bracket [ n ] got converted to a stupid emoticon, sorry)
Are you able to see the hardware/device alarms on the (thick client) operator stations?
