I saw another thread on this board suggesting the free download of Delta V simulation software
provided by emerson. I believe it was older for older versions of Delta V.
Also, does anyone know the version history of Delta V releases over the years?
I notice the current release in v12.x and I have heard of v10.x and v8.x . What are
the approximate dates these major versions were released? It seems very
difficult to find any information about the history of releases and feature differences over
the years. I am curious to also know what OS's environments and hardware requirements
were for the various major releases over the years.
If anyone has a link to the free simulator download and perhaps some version history
I would appreciate if they could post it here.
Did Emerson skip some numbers and jump from 8.x to 10.x? and so on?

Not quite sure why you want this information? Emerson didn't skip any number, v1.x through v12.x were released. I started working with DeltaV in 2000 and the current version then was v4.3.SP2? running on Win NT. V5.x was released that year. Win NT platform was used up to v7.1. V7.2 through v10.3.1 use Win XP S2003. v10.3.1. also supported Vista. Current versions v11.x and v12.x run on Win7 and S2008.
If you contact Emerson sales they can provide you information on purchasing a simulate stand-alone version. This is reasonably priced even for small companies. Also access Guardian support is available. On the Guardian website release notes of previous versions can be found.
To my knowledge, there are no free downloads.

Also, from version 6 onward, a new system for sub-versions was introduced. The x.1 and x.2 subversions were used for engineering projects before the public release, sometimes there are beta-versions for these. Sub x.3 is the public release used for installation at customer sites with some exceptions. Subversions like x.3.1 and x.3.2 are kind of like service packs. Usually no new features are added to the system. Subversions x.4, x.4.1 and x.4.2 are final 'landing zones' which means no hotfixes/patches are developed for these versions. Support also expires after some time for these versions.
From what I could find in short time were following approx. release years:
v7.4 in 2004
v7.4.1 in 2005
v8.3 in 2005
v8.4 in 2006
v8.4.1 in 2006
v7.4.2 in 2007
v8.4.2 in 2008
I'm guessing v5.x in 2000/2001, v6.3 in 2003, v9.3 in 2006, v10.3 in 2009, v10.3.1 in 2010, v11.3 in 2010, v11.3.1 in 2012, v12.3 in 2013, V12.3.1 in 2014.
Maybe others can supply more accurate dates, also from the pre-5 versions. You can make it your job to create the DeltaV page on wikipedia :)
