DeltaV Simulate StandAlone Virtual Machine

Does the DeltaV Simulate StandAlone Virtual Machine software have to be purchased separately from the DeltaV software?
  • You can ask your local representative or Emerson office for the DeltaV Simulate package.

This consists of a simulation dongle and the DeltaV installation DVD's.

    Hi Alphonso and Maarten

DV Simulate is the same software whenever you install it on a real machine or a virtual one.

I don't think (know) that Emerson give virtual machine files ready to use, but it is very simple to create :

    - Load and install "VMware Player" (free for non commercial use)

    - Use a Windows CD (and its serial number) to prepare a new virtual machine

Create a single virtual disk (20 Gb minimum) for initial install of Windows

Add Network adapter(s), parallel port or USB virtual devices in this new machine if needed.

    - When Windows is installed, create a new hard disk (D:) with 10Gb or 20Gb size (in the virtual machine settings)

    - If needed, install Office sofwares (before DeltaV)

    - In the administrative tools, enable the administrator account and choose a non expirable password.

    - Then, install DeltaV with your DVD and choose "Simulate" in the list + "drives C:\ + D:\" option

Beware of passwords you will use.

I suggest you use the same password in this whole virtual machine (Windows session and DeltaV password) because "services" must be configured during installation (or ReRun) and multiple passwords may cause future problems.

After all, load your licence file in the DV explorer to be able to download the Simulate node. The Simulate node name will be the name of this virtual machine (no special chars in this name is better).

    Regards

    Jack

Thanks Jack.  I was reading this whitepaper: www2.emersonprocess.com/.../WP_DeltaV_Virtualization.pdf

On page 17 it states the following: “  The DeltaV Simulate Standalone Virtual Machine (a.k.a., “Simulate on a Stick”) makes it simple to run DeltaV simulate on your laptop or desktop computer without any software installation.

It also goes on to say “It is delivered on a miniature solid state memory drive” or “Via USB port.”  “The virtual machine can be run from the memory stick or you can copy the virtual machine to your local hard drive.”

I already have the DV Simulate software v11.3 but am trying to avoid any installation of DV Simulate and would rather run it off a USB drive if possible.

    Hi Alphonso

    Sorry, I didn't know that.

The best information about it could be obtained from your Emerson dealer.

It seems that a commercial version of Simulate is sold with an Express Card (hosting a SSD) and I imagine that a virtual machine is installed on it.

In that case, I think that the SSD is hosting a Windows OS + Simulate installed, and you can use MSTSC (Remote Desktop) to access this world  (supposition).

I often use Remote Desktop with "/span" option (*) to access virtual machines hosted on a different desktop than mine.

(*) to take advantage of the two screens of my desktop.

You don't have to remote desktop as this is implemented using Virtual PC.
