Live blinking colors

I'm trying to setup some text to blink from one color to a different color. I can setup the color functions to change the color. I can setup the condition to choose if it blinks. But, I can't figure out how to also have it blink between two different colors. This was easy to do in the animations dialog in Configure with the "blink to" column. I can't figure it out in Graphics Studio.

  • Hi TreyB,

Is the animation below what you are trying to achieve?

If this is what you need, take a look at the Text Color Animation option for Blink Animation, this option is available to Text or Datalinks, under the Text tab configuration properties:

Configure both On and Off colors and the text will alternate between those 2 colors when the condition is True.

    I hope this helps!

Perfect. I'm new to Live and was trying to use the BLINK parameter on the object instead. Didn't know the text color had blink automation. I had to add a function for the ON color and OFF color becuase those were also variable, a lot more lifting compared to Configure for sure.... but this will work nicely.

Excellent! I am glad you are using DeltaV Live!

One big advantage of functions is that they are reusable, so you can point different objects to that same function instead of recreating the animation every time, this helps reduce the amount of lift needed on each object.

Just to add to Camilo's last comment, when you update a GEM every display that uses that GEM gets flagged for publication. This can take some time to complete, depending on the number of displays and contained GEMs. When you use Standards and Functions, and you update these, only that Standard or Function needs to be published, and that takes seconds. You still have to refresh at the consoles to use the newly published function.

The one thing I pay attention to with functions is to be frugal with them. When you use a Library Animation, Graphic Studio displays all the Functions that return the matching data type of the object you are animating. If you add a lot of functions, the list will be long and a bit cumbersome to use. And you'll likely have similar functions to choose from. Also, the list is influenced by the folders you create, and you end up with multiple alphabetic seconds. I can't say I've arrived at my "best Practice" to manage Functions, but I'm leaning to placing all my customized functions directly under Functions root, keeping the Emerson folder, and adding an "In Development" folder. That way, all my custom/project Functions are at the top of the list when I use a library animation, followed by all the Emerson OOB function and lastly, any new functions I'm working on.

I used to have multiple folders to group them in the tree, but the filters in the main window view of the Functions allows me to quickly find what I'm looking for, including text filters on Description and Type. This leaves me a two section list, with my Functions at the Top and OOB functions after that. For the In Development functions, I use an X prefix so they end up at the very bottom of the list. I'll rename them once they are moved to the main list.
