Hard reset on 1420 gateway

All,

Is it possible to perform a factory reset on a 1420 gateway without accessing it via the software?

I restored an older backup and have managed to lose IPV4 connectivity.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Victor

If you hold down the reset button and then cycle the power (with the reset held in), the gateway defaults back to factory.
Albeit with a new NetID and new join keys.

  • Hi Victor

Would you please explain where the reset button is located? It's not as obvious as on the 1410.

    thank you

The 1420 has two resets. There is the soft reset which is a like a microprocessor reboot that is a button located on the heavily populated circuit board about a third of the way up on the right side. Then there is a hard reset. This is done by switching the number 2 switch on the three position switch located in the middle of the heavily populated circuit board to ON and then recycle power. This is a last-resort reset that will set your gateway back to the factory defaults, options, enabled features, IP address ..... The gateway logic is to perform a hard reset on powerup if this switch is ON so you must remember to put this switch back to OFF a couple minutes after the gateway starts back up again so it doesn't reset at the next power bump or outage.

    Hi Dale

thanks so much for your prompt reply. That was really useful and accurate. I couldn't find any reference to this on the net, so hopefully this thread will help people out (as I did originally find this through a web search).

    Thanks again.

  • 1420 Reset to Defaults Tech Note:

    Introduction

The gateway devices implement a feature that allows the user to reset the device configuration back to its default settings. This is for the case where the user no longer knows the IP Address of the gateway device or just wants to get back to the defaults and start the configuration process over. There are two methods to restore the default settings.

Method 1. Restore Defaults via Hardware Reset
In the top compartment of the gateway housing you will find the CPU card as in Figure 1 below.
      cpu_board_00
    Figure 1 – CPU Card
The jumper block indicated in Figure 1 will be used to reset the device back to defaults. Place a 0.100” spacing jumper (as shown in Figure 2 below) on the jumper block between pins 1 and 2 as shown above.
    Jumper
    Figure 2 - Jumper
If power to the gateway device is already applied, remove power with the jumper in place. Wait for approximately 1 minute. Then apply power to the gateway. If power was not previously applied to the gateway, simply apply power to the gateway with the jumper in place. Wait for approximately 5 minutes while the device is restarting and copying the default configuration, then the jumper may be removed. The default configuration will now be active and you can resume using the device as it would have come from the factory.

    Hi Dale,

    I've tried what you said, still i can't ping 192.168.1.10 , 255.255.255.0 (subnet).

    Question.

    1. Are you talking about the Jumper block- J4?
    2. Where is 1? if you’re facing the CPU board, is it the top corner?
    3. how will you know that is already boot up properly from the boot LED , when I put the jumper it become solid red.
    4. Is there any sequence on putting the jumper (if you’re talking about the J4 )
    5. Is the default IP will be 192.168.1.10 for port 1 and port 2 is 192.168.2.10 ( this is the default of the new Gateway 4.6.59), will it be the same for 3.8.9?

the jumper is correct - J4 and it will put the gateway in default. Just take note: They are two gateway, one is DeltaV ready and the default gateway IP is 10.5.255.254 and the other is the non-DeltaV ready and the default gateway IP is 192.168.1.10.
