Ladder Logic running in a Foxboro I/A digital IO card

Did you know a Foxboro I/A system can run ladder logic code in the digital IO cards?

Often when I run content based analysis on a customer’s configuration I will find motor and valve controls running outside the controllers in the digital IO cards. Getting an accurate IO count for these points is notoriously difficult. Preparing an estimate for the conversion effort can also be negatively affected unless this ladder logic is identified. This logic can be overlooked adding unscoped work to the conversion effort for the project execution team.

A recent analysis of a powerhouse configuration discovered 69 ladder logic files in the IO cards. Upon analysis, 844 digital inputs and 266 digital outputs were discovered. This is no small number to overlook in a migration project. The modernization team’s analytical tools provided this valuable information to the execution team. The ladder logic and IO points were documented and served as engineering references/aides to the migration effort.
