Online MD Controller upgrade to MQ controller (DV11.3.1)

Hello Folks

I would like to know if it is possible to do a Online MD Controller upgrade to MQ controller (DV11.3.1).Controller Ver.11.3.1.4336 without shutting down the process or decommissioning the controller ?

To test, I did a replacement of Standby MD controller to MQ controller (Also Ver. 11.3.1.4336) and then after some time the partner became healthy and redundant partner became available.

I was not sure if switching over to secondary (MQ controller) would work or not so replaced back with MD controller.

If it is possible to do this, then how do we change the Controller type in controller properties from MD to MQ without decommissioning the controller, does it change automatically once the Standby redundant MQ controller becomes active?

Any insight into  this type of online upgrade will be highly appreciated

Thanks

  • Hi,

I actually just did this on our system, although we are v12.3.1, but the steps are identical.

If you have no issue doing a redundancy switchover with the two MD controllers, then switching over to an MQ is the same. If you are unsure about the switchover, there is a utility on one of the DeltaV Install discs you can use to analyze your system fhx file for any switchover issues.

I swapped out the standby unit with MQ, then waited until diagnostics showed Partner Exists, Partner is Available, Redundancy Enabled and redundant controller FreTim 100.

I forced a redundancy switchover, then swapped the standby MD (it was active but now standby) with another MQ.

    Done.
