How do I decommission an Emerson Smart Switch (or do I need to?)

I have an FP20 series Smart Switch by Emerson and an SI dongle for off-site commissioning of a new E-house that's going to be delivered to the customer's site, already running DeltaV. I commissioned the switch to explore any pre-configuration that may need to be done prior to shipping the building the site. I now see that I should not have done this without a full copy of the site database, so that I am assured that it gets a unique IP address and module name.

I then tried to decommission it (as I would with a controller or VIM module) but it doesn't appear to be an option in the Network Management Center. It appears that I can login to the switch with Telnet and change settings there, but I'd like to ensure that I leave the switch in the best state for site to smoothly integrate it into their system. (There was a mention in one document about possibly setting the IP address back to 0.0.0.0)

Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

  • Brent,

you can reset the DeltaV Smart Switches to default by using CLI with serial cable (command deltav default), or if you are using DeltaV v13.3 or higher, the Network Device Command Center (NDCC) allows you to decommission switches through the network just right click the switch you want to decommission in NDCC and choose the option 'Restore Defaults'.

You are probably trying to do the same described above over Telnet (or SSH) and the command 'deltav default' is only available using the serial cable.

This will not get rid of the modules in your separate DeltaV database, but once decommissioned, you can manually delete the modules in DeltaV Explorer and re-open NDCC to see the references will no longer be there.

All these steps are described in the NDCC Help under "Remove Switch" section.

    I hope this helps!

Thank you very much for your quick and accurate response. I searched Help, Books On Line, and various web searches for "decommission smart switch", and none of them came up with this. I found it in the Help after looking where you said it would be.
