License Not Being Recognized - DeltaV Explorer, DeltaV 12.3

I am in the process of resurrecting a single control single workstation system (DeltaV v. 12.3).  This system was working fine before it was powered down about 1.5 years ago.  I recently powered it back up and was presented an error from the Easy Security Management App that it had stopped working.  This window popped up continuously as I tried to navigate through DeltaV explorer.  I found out that this software isn't necessary to run DeltaV and that it will sometimes lock down ports (like our USB dongle with our license) so I removed it and rebooted the computer.

However I'm still being presented with an "Access is denied" message when I start DeltaV explorer.  Also when I try to get a license report I get an error message saying "Access is denied".  I can't download, I can't commission anything... please help!

Here is what I have tried so far:

1.  I uninstalled Easy Security Management App.

2.  I have rebooted several times.

3.  I have installed the USB dongle in a different port.

4.  I have tried loading our license file on top of our existing license file from the CD that came with the software.

Can anyone suggest anything else?

Thanks!

Kevin

  • Not sure what the actual problem is, but if Easy Security had the USB ports locked down then uninstalling Easy Security would not necessarily unlock the USB ports. If you're not sure, you should probably install Easy Security and verify that everything is off and then uninstall it.

That being said, I don't think Easy Security interferes with the license dongle even when it has the USB ports locked down so it’s probably not the source of your current problems.

Are you logged in as an administrator when starting DeltaV Explorer? In DeltaV Explorer, if you open the Help Menu/ About DeltaV Explorer, does the System ID show a key? Does the key match the loaded license file(s)?

  • First I assume the liciense file and the dongle key match. If that is the case then I would plug a standard USB pen drive into the port and see if that is recognized. If that works then forget about Easy Security.

If not then its possible but USB lockdown prevents a usb being mounted as a drive and should not interfere with a hardlock dongle being recognised.

Have you tried running workstation config to see if the system become operational.

Also have you tried establishing that the USB key has not been damaged in some way. Plug into a seperate system and see if its recognised.

Armed with those facts the group may be able to help further.

I plugged it in to multiple ports and the computer device manager recognizes it.

However I think I discovered the problem:
The user that we use to login to the Workstation is called "Emerson" which is listed as an Administrator. I right-clicked and ran DeltaV explorer as Administrator and now I can download and commission normally. Did my "Emerson" account get compromised? Should I address this?

Glad you are in. Couple of things (Sorry I did not jump in on this earlier)
    1. The license dongle and Hardlock driver can be verified using the small applet called "Watchit". You can type this in the windows Start->Run command. Then you type in DONGLEDRIVER. This will return the status of the License dongle. This would have confirmed if you had an issue with the Dongle. Note you can use this app to view any DeltaV variable by typing in the path. It's a useful trouble shooting app. There is another path called SYSTEMIDKEY, which will tell you what Dongle is connected to the system, even if run on a different machine.

    2. With the added information in the last post, it seems that you have an issue with the Windows Security.

Security on the DeltaV computer is divided between windows security and DeltaV privileges. Windows Security applies the Windows logon user. This user account must be part of the Windows security groups, specifically the Group called DeltaV. The DeltaV logon does not change the Windows user on the computer, but simply confers the DeltaV privileges associated with that user name. The DeltaV user requires a Windows Account by the same name in order to complete the authentication process, but that windows user need not be used to logon to the computer.

If your issues occurred while a non DeltaV windows user was logged on, you may find that the Emerson account is properly setup and would work if used to logon to windows and also to DeltaV. You may have been using the DeltaV logon with the account Emerson but over a non DeltaV windows account. Or, your Emerson Windows account has been modified and is not longer in the DeltaV Group.

If this is a Domain machine, and you have both a Local account called Emerson, and a Domain account "MyDomain\Emerson", and you were not on the Pro Plus (it is the DC so the local Emerson account would be the Domain account for the system) the local account on the non-proplus computer might exist and you were logged on with a local account that was not in the DeltaV Group.

Point is there are some layers to this so you have to figure out what your situation was. This can be reproduced quite easily, and can also be prevented. The windows administration event logs should show the history of windows user logons. That might help determine exactly what happened.

Note: If the Windows Logon user does not have DeltaV security, the WATCHIT applet would also not launch as it to is in the same directory as the other DeltaV programs. you can also use the Help-> About menu choice in DeltaV Explorer to view the connected Dongle, but WATCHIT is a quick check and more direct, especially when you are troubleshooting whether the dongle is working.
