How the System Time could changed suddenly and automatically?

Dear My friends

I got this report from one of our clients :

" After rebooting one of the OWS which was hanged , the DeltaV system time changed to 30 min back and caused a total shutdown. this issue happens 2 times from same point (same OWS) during this month "

The masted Time sync is set to Pro+

Now I want to know why it happened and what should I do for survey and remedy.?

Thank you in advanced for any data

Best Regards

Jefry

  • Jefry,

    we need to better understand this problem in more details, especially because a 'total shutdown' should not be caused by this specific observed issue - there might be other events associated to the issue whereas a root cause is not yet defined. Based on criticality, I'd assume: 1) a GSC call is already opened to help the customer with this specific issue. This is the correct channel to deal with specific issues with tracking information and responses provided on a timely manner. 2) not knowing how this DeltaV system was designed, it is difficult to provide a clear answer or options to search for root causes in my opinion.

    Based on the brief description it is hard to tell if the 'total shutdown' affects workstations, servers and embedded nodes altogether, or only the OWS in question. I don't know if the Pro+ is the only time server or if other references are also present (e.g. a GPS time server or other any other server) - if the Pro+ is the master time server, then workstations would not be allowed to change the master time reference.

    There are multiple ways to start this investigation, but again, due to the criticality I'd highly recommend getting support from GSC right away, if not done yet. Hope this helps!

    Alexandra;
    Thank you for your reply,
    for more detail;
    After rebooting the stopped OWS, system time goes back (around 30 min) and after that, all workstations go to hang(stop) state and operators could not operate at all, finally the plant shutdown occurred because of some process uncontrolled condition.
    So , time change makes operation stop.not plant shutdown.
    my question is about the reasons that could make time changing in Deltav system.

    What antivirus solution are you using on the workstations? Are your virus definitions up to date? I think you may be associating one thing (Windows system time change on OWS) with an unrelated event (operator stations become unresponsive). As Alexandre pointed out, opening a call with GSC is a must. Unless you configured the "stopped" OWS to be the Master Time Server in the DeltaV configuration, then all nodes will synchronize with the ProPlus. Rebooting a machine that is not the authoritative time server does not cause a DeltaV system time change.
