Module Operation based on User

Hello,

I have a discrete valve that I would like to minimize operation based on the user signed in. I want to be able to stop operators from actuating the valve and only allow actuation when Administrator, or supervisor, is logged in. I am not sure what the best method of doing this would be.

  • Is there a way that I can add an interlock to the valve based on THISUSER? This would be my ideal method.
  • Would it be best to assign this valve to a separate area that only the Administrator and Supervisor have access to?
  • Should I be looking at graphical options? Visibility, faceplate modifications, etc...

I would appreciate any input.

Regards.

  • Steve, is that you?

The safest change is to move to a separate area but this would require you to also change the Operators User/Group area assignments because they would probably have the Control Key sitewide. This would address the issue of an operator in Control Studio Online not being able to operate from there as well.

Another method could be a combination of configuration and faceplate. You could expose the SP_D parameter (I assume it's using the DC block) and write another parameter that you can name a certain way and then add this parameter to the parameter security that only the appropriate users would have the key for. This also allows the module to stay in the area that it currently resides in. Then wire from the new parameter to the SP_D and use a new faceplate that writes to the new parameter instead of the SP_D on the DC block. This may have some drawback with the DC block DEVICE_OPT SP Track option as it probably wouldn't work. If you don't like that problem, the new parameter added could be an Internal Reference and pointed to the SP_D (no wire) and the same Faceplate change would work but wouldn't address the Control Studio Online change issue.

The faceplate only option could be done but doesn't address the changes from Control Studio Online if operator ever got it open and understood what they were looking at to make a change.

It's really just a ease of config, support and what the change allows or doesn't allow. I would probably lean more to the configuration and faceplate option if I needed to do this configuration because I wouldn't have to change the Users and/or Group area assignments or the module area assignment. If you only have a few users that isn't bad, if you have individual logins...it could take a while to fix all of that.

    Matt,

It is me. I was hoping that I would get someone that I knew responding to my question. It is weird not just calling your desk for these kind of things. I hope all is going well for you and everyone there at MEC.

Thanks for the input, I am not sure what route I am going to take with this, but all seem to be pretty straightforward options. Thanks again.

    Regards,
    Steve

It's crazy busy with training and v13 testing but still great and hope all is well with your new/old job.

If you need to, just call my desk as it would probably be easier most times.

I agree with everything you have stated Rachelle.

I think information is sometimes lost within the social media environment and sometimes slow in response time as well. I was just trying to state that if in dire need, call me because Steve use to work with our group and knows how to contact me.

I wasn't trying to indicate to stop using this forum to ask questions (I guess the social media issue I talked about reared it's ugly head! [:(]).
