The item definition does not exist within the servers address space

When loading graphics, we often get the error "The item definition does not exist within the servers address space" for several modules.   It is usually for PID loops which have the OUT.F_CV parameter.   In addition, the graphics containing these modules show purple initially like the system can't find the information.   Once the errors are skipped, the graphic works fine and the modules are accessible with no issues.   If we switch to another graphic and come right back, the error does not occur, but if the graphic is not on the screen for a few minutes and then is accessed again, the error occurs again.   One time we may get the error for 6 modules, the next time it may only be for three.   It seems to occur on workstations differently.   One workstation is located in the same area as the ProPlus workstation and it rarely has an issue.   Another workstation located in the control room (300 ft and on a secondary hub) has the issue more often.

It seems like the graphic can't access the database fast enough to get all the data before it throws an error.  Anyone else have this issue or thoughts on how to resolve?

  • Not an expert here, but here are two suggestions Ive used before for optimizing DeltaV Operate performance:

    1) Run the "Resolve Files" utility in configure mode. This is located in the DeltaV Utilities toolbar. Select all of you graphics and run the utility. It will go through and resolve all of the tag references with the database so that DeltaV Operate does not have to do this in run time. However, I believe you have to re-run this anytime you close out of Operate and open it back up.

    2) You can use the picture cache for the problem graphics. From configure mode go to Workspace-> User Preferences to the tab "Picture Preferences." There is a section in this tab called "Cache." Enable this for however many graphics you wish to use this for, by default I believe it is 5. I am not sure of the memory demands of this feature if you want to use it for a bunch of graphics but it should be good for up to at least 5 since that is the default and probably more I would think. Now, you can configure your preload picture list with the problem graphics from your description. Do this by clicking the "Configures the Preload Picture List" in the DeltaV Utilities toolbar and add in the desired graphics. The preload picture list keeps these graphics in the cache memory so that they are always loaded and can be pulled up much quicker.

With picture cache enabled graphics will stay in the cache up to the designated size set in the preferences and then will clear from the cache once it has filled. So if your cache size is set to 5 then the cache will maintain the 5 most recently pulled graphics at all times. Pre-loaded pictures are, however, never dropped from the cache.

Hopefully, this may help with your issue.

For reference, you can look up "Using Picture Caching" in Books Online for more details and instructions on how to use the feature.
