Periodic backup for my system... What is important?

Hi everyone,

Which files should I backup from time to time? I was thinking that maybe I should backup different files depending on what I was trying to prevent... Let's say that I'm trying to create a backup that would allow to recover from a complete system failure without losing ANY data (control strategies, historical data, pictures, etc.) What should I backup then? (Delta V 10.3)

Thanks!

  • Try using the utility on the application exchange http://deltav.com/Appsnew/application.asp?subid=595, it works quite well for our backup needs and even allows remote destinations such as NAS.

I've checked the software and found it easy to use, but I sitll hace the following question that I hope you can help me to clear:

    1. Is it preferable to store backups inside the DV stations (pro +) instead of using an indepented storage device? I have available an external USB drive specifically for this purpose, but I've seen that almost every topic about this assumes that you'll be storing the backed-up data inside the workstations.

    2. Can I just copy and paste in a safe place the POWERUP folder (pro +) to keep controllers important data safe? I know of course that system database, event chronicle, pics, and historical datapoints need to be also backed up to make sense, but what about the controllers data?

    3. Simply exporting the system database from DV Explorer to a .fhx file is exactly the same in terms of backinh up the data than using the Backup/Restore database tool in the Database Administrator?

    Thanks in advance.

  • DVDCS Backup has to store locally first before it can copy to remote/external storage.  I use a pair of NAS boxes located in two different CCBs and use windows DFS to replicate between the both, each DV application/PRO+ copies across a 1GB plant LAN connection to the NAS.

I use three profiles on each machine, Daily, Weekly and Monthly, clearing the folders for daily and weekly before commencing a backup (this is an option in the profile), just to keep the backup space manageable.

    1.      It depends upon your storage capacity constraints, but as stated above, the backup has to be to local storage first.

    2.      This is an option in DVDCS Backup [Database] tab, available when installed on a PRO+.

    3.      No, there is a difference between fhx and Database Administration “Backup & Restore”, “Daily Export Enable” is the same as exporting from DV explorer.  The former is an objectivity backup and contains all objects of the system, whereas an fhx needs to be imported into a new database and it can change node IDs.  I remember someone did a good explanation of the differences in a previous post, might be worth referencing.

    Hope this helps.
