Installation of EG WorkstationST on DeltaV App station

Hi Everyone,

We are an EPC busy with a project that requires integration between a DeltaV DCS and three separate GE GTs using MarkVIe. We aim to replicate the GE Cimplicity graphics on DeltaV Live, in order to provide a single operator interface in the control room. Some hardwired signals will be configured between the controllers for critical functions, and the interface to the Operator stations will mostly be for monitoring.

We initially considered using Modbus TCP direclty between between the controllers (a PK300 and MarkVIe for each GT), but because of potential processor loading constraints on the MarkVIe side, that option seems less desirable, and we are now considering other options. One of the options that we are investigating is as follows:

For this solution, we would install GE's WorkstationST on the DeltaV App station, and use it to convert between MarkVIe's EGD and OPC, and use DeltaV's included OPC client. The required DeltaV modules would probably rather execute on the App station itself, than on the controller, but the rest is basically the same as drawn above. We would like to install the GE WorkstationST software on the DeltaV App station, because we are using the HCI virtualised environment, which makes it easy to deploy additional redundant virtual servers without buying additional hardware. Another option would be to procure additional GE servers to run the WorkstationST.

There is some concern from the LBP with regards to installing 3rd party software on the DeltaV Application Station. My question related to this is: is it standard practice to install 3rd party software on Application Stations? Further, if anyone has done this or something similar before, could you please share your thoughts on any problems experienced, or advice on the solution?

Any feedback is greatly appreciated!

Regards,

Hendrik.

  • Hendrik, another option might be to use an Emerson PLC that can communicate with the Mark controllers via EGD.

    Hi Mats,

    Thank you for your response.

Using one of the PAC controllers is the other option that we are considering. The engineer on GE's side recommended the WorstationST solution, and I quite like it because of the simplicity and the fact that we don't need any additional hardware, but between the Emerson LBP and Client, I think there is a preference for using an additional controller to convert between EGD and Modbus, so there's a good chance we'll end up doing that.

I'm still curious about installing 3rd party software on the App Station, and whether it's something people often do?

    Hendrik.
